Five centre-backs Chelsea should target after Mamadou Sarr shocker vs PSG - opinion

Mamadou Sarr’s Champions League debut for Chelsea was a real baptism of fire.

The central defender started in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night and was at fault for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s opener.

Whether Sarr recovers from that bad performance or not, everyone knows the Blues need to sign an experienced centre-back this summer. The Chelsea Chronicle has taken a look at some good options for Liam Rosenior’s side.

Did Rosenior make a mistake handing Sarr his first Champions League start in THIS scenario?

Antonio Rudiger

A player Chelsea know very well, Antonio Rudiger could be set to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Rudiger is 33 now, but that is a good thing! Rosenior needs a centre-half of his experience and ability. On a free transfer, it is a no-brainer.

Cristian Romero

Usually, there would be no chance of Chelsea signing a player from Tottenham Hotspur. But if they get relegated, Cristian Romero will become available.

Romero is one of the best central defenders in the Premier League, though his discipline will concern some at Chelsea.

Micky van de Ven

If Tottenham do go on to get relegated, then Romero’s centre-half partner Micky van de Ven is another Spurs player Chelsea have to consider.

Van de Ven’s discipline is not as bad as Romero’s, while the Dutchman is absolutely rapid. He is perfect for a modern-day coach like Rosenior, who wants to utilise a high defensive line during games.

Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate will need a lot of persuading to join Chelsea, while the 26-year-old has not had the best season.

With that being said, he is also set to become a free agent like Rudiger. There is no harm in trying to sign Konate, a central defender who still has a lot of strength, pace and quality as a central defender despite his recent struggles.

The Marc Guehi ship has sailed… Any experienced alternatives that come to mind ahead of this summer?

Gleison Bremer

Finally, there is Juventus’ Gleison Bremer, who is one of the more realistic names on this list. Bremer is someone Chelsea have been looking at, so do not be surprised if they do make a move for him at some point.

Bremer has developed into a real leader at Juventus, captaining them on a few occasions this season. The Brazilian or any of the above names would be perfect for Chelsea.
