Barcelona had won all 12 matches since returning to Camp Nou and got the game off to a near-perfect start as Raphinha made it 1-0 inside the opening six minutes.
Newcastle levelled things up less than 10 minutes later as Anthony Elanga dinked in his second goal of the season from Lewis Hall’s low cross.
But they weren’t level for long as Marc Bernal restored the hosts’ lead three minutes later.
The back-and-forth game continued when Lewis Hall pounced on a Lamine Yamal error to slip in Harvey Barnes who found Elanga at the back post.
Lamine Yamal missed a golden chance to put Barcelona back in front just before half-time but then got another as Kieran Trippier conceded a penalty. Just as he did last week at St James’ Park, the winger converted to make it 3-2 to Barcelona at half-time.
Aaron Ramsdale - 6
Could do little about the opening goal. Reacted well off his line to stop Barcelona making it 2-0 shortly after. Got close to Yamal’s penalty but couldn’t keep it out.
Kieran Trippier - 5
Didn’t cover himself in glory for Barcelona’s second but showed his technical ability playing balls forward with a good range of passing. Conceded a penalty just before half-time and struggled defensively at times.
Malick Thiaw - 5
Slipped in the build-up to the opening goal, also gifted Barcelona a big chance at 2-2. Very shaky.
Dan Burn - 7
Had an early effort on target comfortably saved. Played everyone onside for Barcelona’s second goal. Defended brilliantly to stop Barcelona making it 3-2 after Thiaw’s error.
Lewis Hall - 7
Also slipped in the build-up to Barcelona’s opener. Made up for a shaky start by assisting Anthony Elanga and playing a key role in the second for Newcastle by winning the ball back.
Sandro Tonali - 6
Missed the ball in a dangerous area but fortunately he was saved by Ramsdale’s alertness off his line. Had a couple of difficult moments but also showed good energy to sweep things up.
Jacob Ramsey - 7
Was a spectator for Barcelona’s second goal but showed his quality further forward.
Joelinton - 6
Booked early on with a foul that led to Barcelona’s second goal. Battled well otherwise.
Anthony Elanga - 9
Had a poor opening 15 minutes but was alert and clinical to bounce back and draw Newcastle level with a tidy finish. In the right place again to make it 2-2. This first away player to score a brace at Camp Nou since Barcelona returned. Can’t ask for much more.
Harvey Barnes - 8
Played a role in Newcastle’s first and second goals down the left. Was a threat and carried the ball well.
Hasn’t seen a lot of the ball but has continued to work hard and occupy the defenders.
