Anthony Richardson's time in Indianapolis is over

Daniel Jones has cemented his role as the Indianapolis Colts long-term option at quarterback after beating Anthony Richardson in a training camp battle ahead of the 2025 season.

With Jones returning on a two-year deal, this ends Richardson’s time as a member of the organization after three seasons. The player has been permitted to seek a trade and find a new team.

Bold Prediction Sends Anthony Richardson to Green Bay

While there isn’t much market for the quarterback, there are still a few teams interested in Anthony Richardson’s talents and one specific team mentioned: the Green Bay Packers.

It was reported that there isn’t much progress on a deal, but that doesn’t stop people from making predictions. FanSided’s Austen Bundy predicts that the Colts will trade Richardson to the Packers.

“There’s a much greater chance than not that Richardson isn’t going to be a starter wherever he lands, at least not immediately. He could, however, continue to serve as a backup for a team that needs an insurance policy in the event [a] star QB goes down,” Bundy wrote.

“Enter the Green Bay Packers, who just lost their 2025 backup in Malik Willis to free agency (Miami Dolphins). Richardson isn’t Willis, but like him, he could prove to be worth the investment if needed in short bursts in the event Jordan Love has to sit.”

ESPN’s Stephen Holder revealed that the Packers were one of a few teams interested in Richardson.

It was reported that trading Anthony Richardson to a new team won’t get the Indianapolis Colts much in a return, with an anonymous NFL executive saying that the player would be worth a fifth or sixth round draft selection — similar to what Bundy wrote.

“Too much injury risk. Look, if you really did your work on him at Florida, they were running five plays… If I had a situation where I wanted to create some packages and get him on the field in certain situations? I could see that. But he would be a pass for me now as a starting option.”

Colts Looking At Other Quarterbacks

It has been clear that Anthony Richardson wants to find a new team where he can at least fight for the starting job. Indianapolis retaining Daniel Jones doesn’t make it possible for Richardson to become the backup for the Colts

Riley Leonard is set to become the official backup (or starter, depending on Jones’ recovery from his leg injuries) in the 2026 season.

With Pro Days happening, it appears Indy is interested in another quarterback. Essentially Sports’ Tony Pauline reports the Colts were at Georgia Tech’s Pro Day, looking at quarterback Haynes King.

“One NFC East team described [King] as ‘dialed in’ throughout the entire workout. For those keeping score, he hit on 52 of 54 passes and was very accurate. Over the course of the past two days, King met with the… Indianapolis Colts.”

King will unlikely take the starting job from the get-go, but could lap Leonard as the backup quarterback.

Indianapolis’ interest in a quarterback means Anthony Richardson will no longer be part of the team.

The former fourth overall pick has accrued 2,400 passing yards, 11 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions in his tenure with the Colts, while rushing for 10 touchdowns.
