Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle United player ratings: Here’s how Anthony Elanga, Anthony Gordon, Lewis Hall and co fared at Camp Nou.

Harvey Barnes put Newcastle 1-0 up at St James’ Park in the first leg last week before Lamine Yamal scored a stoppage-time penalty to draw Barcelona level heading into the second leg.

Barcelona had won all 12 matches since returning to Camp Nou and got the game off to a near-perfect start as Raphinha made it 1-0 inside the opening six minutes.

Newcastle levelled things up less than 10 minutes later as Anthony Elanga dinked in his second goal of the season from Lewis Hall’s low cross.

But they weren’t level for long as Marc Bernal restored the hosts’ lead three minutes later.

The back-and-forth game continued when Lewis Hall pounced on a Lamine Yamal error to slip in Harvey Barnes who found Elanga at the back post.

Lamine Yamal missed a golden chance to put Barcelona back in front just before half-time but then got another as Kieran Trippier conceded a penalty. Just as he did last week at St James’ Park, the winger converted to make it 3-2 to Barcelona at half-time.

Barcelona then made it 4-2 with Fermin Lopez breaking clear and slotting past Ramsdale to seemingly put the tie to bed.

Robert Lewandowski then made it 5-2 by heading in from a corner minutes later. The Polish striker scored again to pile the Camp Nou misery on for the Magpies.

Raphinha then made it 7-2 after bringing down Jacob Ramsey’s stray pass on the edge of the box.

Aaron Ramsdale - 4

Could do little about the opening goal. Reacted well off his line to stop Barcelona making it 2-0 shortly after. Got close to Yamal’s penalty but couldn’t keep it out. The first Newcastle goalkeeper to concede seven in a competitive match since 2012.

Kieran Trippier - 4

Didn’t cover himself in glory for Barcelona’s second but showed his technical ability playing balls forward with a good range of passing. Conceded a penalty just before half-time and struggled defensively before being taken off at the break. Booked.

Malick Thiaw - 2

Slipped in the build-up to the opening goal, also gifted Barcelona a big chance at 2-2. An error led to Barcelona’s sixth and generally did little to keep the hosts at bay all night. Woeful after his strong showing at Chelsea.

Dan Burn - 4

Had an early effort on target comfortably saved. Played everyone onside for Barcelona’s second goal. Defended brilliantly to stop Barcelona making it 3-2 after Thiaw’s error.

Lewis Hall - 6

Also slipped in the build-up to Barcelona’s opener. Made up for a shaky start by assisting Anthony Elanga and playing a key role in the second for Newcastle by winning the ball back.

Sandro Tonali - 5

Missed the ball in a dangerous area, but was saved by Ramsdale’s alertness off his line. Had a couple of difficult moments but also showed good energy to sweep things up. Taken off 10 minutes into the second half

Jacob Ramsey - 4

Was a spectator for Barcelona’s second goal. Had a couple of promising moments but was ultimately too passive as Barcelona played through Newcastle with ease. Gifted Raphinha Barcelona’s seventh.

Joelinton - 5

Booked early on with a foul that led to Barcelona’s second goal and struggled to impose himself on the game after that.

Anthony Elanga - 7

Had a poor opening 15 minutes but was alert and clinical to bounce back and draw Newcastle level with a tidy finish. In the right place again to make it 2-2. The first away player to score a brace at Camp Nou since Barcelona returned but it was ultimately in vain.

Harvey Barnes - 6

Played a role in Newcastle’s first and second goals down the left. Was a threat and carried the ball well in the first half but dropped off with his teammates in the second.

Anthony Gordon - 5

Hasn’t seen a lot of the ball but has continued to work hard and occupy the defenders.

Substitutes

Tino Livramento - 3

On for Trippier 46: Beaten by Lewandowski at the back post. Brought no quality to the game at either end.

Joe Willock - 4

On for Tonali 55: Barely got a sniff. Booked.

Jacob Murphy - 5

On for Elanga 64: The game was gone but couldn’t offer any more threat going forward for Newcastle.

Sven Botman - 5

On for Joelinton 64: Brought on to help Newcastle defensively.

William Osula - n/a

On for Gordon 81: Had a few touches for his Camp Nou runaround.
