Chelsea Fcw 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion WFC, Women’s Super League: Post-match reaction

Given our very limited options for the backline in light of several centre-back injuries and the fact this squad is coming from a hard-fought final win against Manchester United in the Women’s League Cup only three days ago, you couldn’t ask for a better start for Chelsea Women. Brighton tried to explore our defensive woes but failed to profit and in turn the Blues got the opening goal via Alyssa Thompson on a headed attempt.

Things would have been perfect if it weren’t for our bad luck. Carla Camacho took a low shot from range which deflected off Sandy Baltimore. It took Hannah Hampton completely off the play and as a result the visitors got the equaliser only four minutes after Thompson’s opener.

Chelsea weren’t too happy about this, unlike Brighton who looked as if they would settle for the final whistle blowing as soon as the ball made its way across Hampton. In our insistence — as well as Brighton practically giving up on leaving their own half — Lexi Potter scored her first ever Chelsea goal, and our second tonight.

We had all the reasons to not want to score more goals. Brighton who were in the very opposite side of the spectrum looked even more unwilling to risk it for the biscuit. It made for a rather easy ride towards the final whistle.

* Sjoeke Nüsken playing as right-back… her versatility knows no bounds.

* First Chelsea start for Lexi Potter, and first professional goal to boot.

* Alyssa Thompson quietly picking up some good stats in her debut Chelsea season.

* Next up: London City away in the Women’s Super League.

* KTBFFH!
