The Kansas City Chiefs have answered their backup quarterback question in dramatic fashion, acquiring Justin Fields from the New York Jets for a 2027 sixth-round pick — and now reports indicate Kansas City may have big plans to deploy the former first-rounder in creative ways even after Patrick Mahomes returns from ACL surgery.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk and Mina Kimes of ESPN both highlighted the likelihood that the Chiefs will install specific packages tailored to Fields’ unique skill set.

Chiefs Eye Unique Role for Justin Fields in 2026 – “Packages” Plan Turns Heads Around NFL
Florio noted:
“Maybe Justin Fields is gonna be a guy who has a package just to keep Patrick Mahomes from doing too much. The possibilities are endless.”
Kimes added:
“They could also install some packages for Fields. They haven’t been able to use quarterback sneaks with Patrick Mahomes. Well, now you’ve got a quarterback who you can run sneaks with.”
The comments have sparked widespread discussion around the league about how the Chiefs might creatively use Fields’ elite rushing ability to protect Mahomes’ health while adding a dynamic element to Andy Reid’s offense.
Patrick Mahomes Injury & Chiefs’ Need for QB Depth
Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in Week 15 of the 2025 season. In January 2026, he provided a positive update, saying rehab was “going great so far.” Still, the Chiefs want to be cautious with their franchise quarterback heading into his age-31 campaign. Mahomes rushed 64 times last season (over 4.5 carries per game), finishing with career highs of 422 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns — numbers Kansas City would prefer not to replicate coming off major knee surgery.
Fields gives the Chiefs a proven, high-upside backup who can take meaningful reps during offseason workouts, training camp, and potentially early-season games if Mahomes’ recovery timeline extends.
Justin Fields Among NFL’s Most Dangerous Rushing Quarterbacks
Fields has long been one of the most explosive dual-threat quarterbacks in football. Across 59 career games (53 starts), he has rushed for 2,892 yards and 23 touchdowns at an average of 5.9 yards per carry.
His 2022 season with the Chicago Bears remains one of the most prolific rushing campaigns ever by a quarterback — 1,143 yards and eight scores on the ground, leading the league with 7.1 yards per attempt and finishing ninth in MVP voting.
While his passing efficiency has been inconsistent (61.4% completion, 9,039 yards, 52 TDs, 32 INTs career), Fields thrives in systems that let him use his legs — something Andy Reid could creatively incorporate without ever threatening Mahomes’ starting role.
Chiefs Can Afford Patience with Patrick Mahomes’ Recovery
With Fields now in the building, the Chiefs no longer face pressure to rush Mahomes back for Week 1 of the 2026 season. Fields gives Kansas City legitimate insurance — someone who can win games if needed — without creating a quarterback controversy.
Fields is entering the final year of his two-year, $40 million deal. Spotrac estimates the Jets and Chiefs will split his 2026 salary, with Kansas City covering roughly $3 million after the trade structure.
At age 27 in 2026, Fields remains one of the most talented backup quarterbacks in the NFL — and his addition dramatically improves Kansas City’s outlook if Mahomes needs extended time to return to full strength.
