Former England manager Fabio Capello has delivered a scathing assessment of Liam Rosenior, claiming the Chelsea boss is “out of his mind” and warning that his players could be “laughing” at his methods following the club’s heavy Champions League defeat.
The criticism comes in the aftermath of CHELSEA‘s humiliating exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, where they were beaten 8-2 on aggregate in the last 16. The result has intensified scrutiny on Rosenior, whose in-game decisions and touchline behaviour have come under increasing fire.
Capello’s comments were sparked by a late incident during the second leg, when Rosenior handed a tactical note to winger Alejandro Garnacho in the closing stages of a match that was already effectively lost. The gesture drew widespread attention, with television cameras capturing Garnacho’s puzzled reaction.
Former England boss and Italian football legend Capello was one of the many left watching on in utter bemusement: ‘He’s out of his mind,’ said Capello, Football Italia report.
‘He did something that will make the players laugh. That’s what they think. You saw his [Garnacho’s] face when he entered the pitch with that note; he was like: “What are you saying to me?”
‘When you do smart things, you are involved, but when you do something like that, how are you involving somebody?’
Capello suggested that such moments risk undermining a manager’s authority within the dressing room, particularly when results are going against the team. He pointed to Garnacho’s visible confusion as evidence that the message may not have been well received, especially given the context of the game.
The Italian was not alone in his criticism. Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta also questioned whether Rosenior’s approach would resonate with players, suggesting that such actions are unlikely to help a coach “get the players on [his] side.”
The incident has become symbolic of a difficult period for CHELSEA, whose performances have dipped sharply in recent weeks. Reports indicate that concerns extend beyond results to include Rosenior’s communication style and tactical approach, both of which have been placed under the microscope.
Despite the mounting criticism, Rosenior is expected to remain in charge for now, with the club reluctant to make another managerial change so soon after his appointment. However, pressure is clearly building, particularly with Champions League qualification for next season now in doubt.
For Capello, the issue is not just about one decision, but what it represents. His remarks underline a growing perception that Rosenior’s methods may not be translating effectively at elite level—raising fresh questions about whether he can command the authority required to lead a club of CHELSEA’s stature.
