Within Chelsea world right now there’s quite a lot of contract talk – Enzo Fernandez is pushing to leave but has a long deal, Reece James has just signed a new one, others are coming to the crucial “sale point” in their deal.
One contract story which still creates a few questions is over Marc Cucurella. When the story about James’ new deal came out, there was a lot of talk that Cucurella had signed an improved deal without it being announced by Chelsea.
Chelsea’s reasoning behind keeping Cucurella bump quiet still unclear
The reasoning is that it just gave him a higher salary, without adding years on. So there was no need to announce it. Kieran Gill of the Daily Mail has an interesting take – it could be that Cucurella simply had the extra year’s option in his deal triggered early. That would give him a nice wage bump without any negotiating needed on either side, would show faith from the club’s side, and effectively tie him down longer (even though that was always in the club’s hands).
Still, we’re not sure why they wouldn’t want the quick PR bump of announcing an extra year… whatever the reality, that seems like a done deal now.
In other news…
Liam Rosenior’s job at Chelsea looks to be safe despite some unhappiness and some murmurs – but everyone’s job is safe until it isn’t.
