Cade Cunningham brutal injury update: Diagnosed with collapsed lung

Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham has suffered a collapsed lung and will be out for an extended period.

Detroit Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham has been diagnosed with a collapsed lung and is expected to miss an extended period of time, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

Cunningham, who is among the leaders in the NBA MVP race, left Tuesday night's game against the Washington Wizards with back spasms. He was injured early in the first quarter while diving for a loose ball.

The Pistons' primary offensive engine and playmaker, Cunningham averages 24.5 points, 9.9 assists, and 5.6 rebounds over 61 games this season, shooting 46.1% from the field and 34.6% from three.

A player must appear in 65 games to qualify for major postseason awards like MVP and All-NBA teams.

Cunningham has led the Pistons to the top seed of the East with a 49-19 record.

The 24-year-old was elected as an All-Star starter for the first time in his career this year. He was also an All-Star last season.

The 2021 first overall pick has played 269 games for the Pistons over five years.

Cunningham played only 12 games in his second NBA season (2022-23) because he was sidelined with multiple injuries, primarily a right foot injury that required surgery, along with other lingering issues that kept him out for most of the season.
