Insider Reveals 'Compromise' Patriots And Romeo Doubs Made In $48M Deal

The New England Patriots went out and signed former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $68 million deal with the Patriots, with $35 million fully guaranteed.

Entering free agency, Doubs and his camp were pushing for a deal at $20 million per season. Yet, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated said that wasn’t something the Patriots wanted to do, so the sides compromised with Doubs being able to get to that number with incentives.

“Romeo Doubs’s contract in New England is another example of a player reaching a compromise by taking less, but with a shot to reach the target his camp set for him,” Breer wrote in an article published on Tuesday. "Doubs aimed to get to $20 million per year. He wound up with a four-year, $68 million deal with the Patriots, with $35 million (essentially the first two years) fully guaranteed.

“And then, he got an incentive package that maxes out at $3 million per year. So if he evolves into a real No. 1, and stays healthy (there’s $1.7 million in per-game roster bonuses each year), the deal could get to $80 million.”

Doubs will likely be a focal point of the Patriots' offense as he projects to be the team’s No. 1 receiver after the team released Stefon Diggs. So, if he can have the season he believes he can, he should be able to reach the $20 million a year he wanted.

Doubs recorded 55 receptions for 724 yards and six touchdowns last season with the Packers.
