The Chicago Bears were quick to make a splash signing during the first day of NFL free agency, inking former Seattle Seahawks safety Coby Bryant to a three-year, $40 million deal. Despite winning a Super Bowl with the Seahawks, Bryant chose to sign with Chicago, and he made it known that quarterback Caleb Williams was a huge reason why.
Joining Kay Adams on the Up & Adams show, Bryant sent a message on Williams and why he was a major factor when choosing the Bears.
Coby Bryant Sends a Message on Caleb Williams
It’s usually never the case for free agents to sign with the Bears because of the quarterback, but things are changing now that Chicago has Williams at QB.
“With Caleb Williams, just a special talent he is,” Bryant said. “The leader he is. He actually reached out to me, the first person to reach out to me when I did sign. We were texting back and forth, just catching up and getting to know each other. Just telling him what we can build and just going off of that, and for him just reaching out to me, it meant a lot honestly. With me playing safety and him being quarterback, and him recognizing my game and vice versa, elite talent. He’s just scratching the surface. …I’m excited to watch him play and watch him be great this year.”
Bryant isn’t the only safety giving Williams praise this offseason. Kevin Byard, who just left Chicago to join the New England Patriots, didn’t hold back on his praise for Williams.
“I expect him to be one of the top quarterbacks, if not top two, top three quarterbacks in the league. And I think he got some Super Bowls, you know, in his sights as well. …He’s a clutch player. He has a clutch gene that you literally cannot coach.”
Bears Made it Known They Wanted Bryant
The Bears did not sugarcoat their feelings when it came to wanting Bryant on the team. They wanted him badly, and Bryant revealed on Adams’ show that they called him at seven in the morning once the negotiation period opened.
“Just the sense of being wanted, honestly. They called me at 7 a.m. I’m in Arizona so they called me pretty early, which I had just woken up. That struck it right there. Just like I said, just being wanted and them pursuing to get me over there. It wasn’t easy, you know, being in Seattle for four years. Ultimately I’m blessed and that’s where it led me to Chicago.”
Bryant went on to say how the Bears told him how much they wanted him to be on the team and what he could bring to the team, and added how he already knows that what Chicago is building is special.
“I already seen what they were building from day one with the team last year. Ben [Johnson] and Caleb Williams. All those guys. It’s definitely gonna be special. I’m excited to be a part of it.”
The Bears believe they signed a game-changer in Bryant, who tallied 227 total tackles, two sacks, seven interceptions, and 17 pass deflections in 58 career games with the Seahawks.
Just like Williams, Bryant is only scratching the surface of his talent.
