The Colts have re-signed cornerback Cameron Mitchell in free agency

The Indianapolis Colts have been big spenders early on this offseason, and yet, they haven’t exactly gone out of their way to bring new faces to town. Instead, the front office has focused on finding a way to keep its top players in town, with both quarterback Daniel Jones and wide receiver Alec Pierce headlining that group.

While both Jones and Pierce re-signed with Indianapolis on big-money deals, they aren’t the only players that Indianapolis has to focus on re-signing. One of the more overlooked free agents the Colts had to make a decision on was cornerback Cameron Mitchell, and it seems like he has figured out what his future looks like in the NFL after briefly testing the open market.

Colts Re-Sign Cornerback Cameron Mitchell

Mitchell was initially selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but he never really got an opportunity to carve out a role for himself on defense. Playing in 32 games (four starts) over two-plus seasons with Cleveland, Mitchell racked up 43 tackles, one sack, four pass breakups, and one forced fumble.

Early in the 2025 campaign, Mitchell got released by the Browns, but it didn’t take him very long to find a new home, as the Colts came calling. After initially latching on with their practice squad, Mitchell eventually found his way to their active roster, playing in eight games for the team late in the season. All in all, Mitchell finished the year with 18 tackles and four pass breakups for Indy.

As he prepared to hit the open market, it seemed like Mitchell had some positive momentum working in his favor, which made it seem like a reunion with the Colts was no sure thing. After hitting free agency, though, Mitchell decided to stick around with Indianapolis after experiencing some success with them in 2025, as he re-signed with the team on Thursday morning.

“We have re-signed CB Cameron Mitchell,” the Colts announced in a post on X.

Early in his career, it was tough to justify giving Mitchell many snaps because his coverage metrics were awful. After landing with the Colts, though, Mitchell put together his best string of action in his young career. Opposing quarterbacks posted a passer rating of just 79.9 on passes where Mitchell was the closest defender in coverage, and after allowing three touchdowns in just two games with the Browns in 2025, he allowed only one in eight games with the Colts.

At just 24 years old, Mitchell still has quite a bit of potential that Indianapolis could look to tap into. He won’t exactly earn snaps right off the bat in 2026, especially with Sauce Gardner expected to be healthy to begin the year, but Mitchell is an intriguing developmental prospect for the team. There’s no guarantee he’ll make the team’s initial roster, but Mitchell showed enough in 2025 to earn himself another shot with the Colts heading into the new season.
