Former Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry commented on the team's lack of culture

After back-to-back seasons of missing the postseason, the Miami Dolphins have entered a rebuild. After the team’s 1-6 start during the 2025 season, a rebuild and transition became a real possibility for the Dolphins. That became evident once the team made the decision to dismiss general manager Chris Grier.

The Dolphins then had a strong second half of the reason as they won nine of their final games, but it was not enough to convince owner Stephen Ross toretain head coach Mike McDaniel for the 2026 season. During his Dolphins tenure, McDaniel was often praised for his innovative playcalling and offensive scheme; however, hisunconventional coaching style led to criticism.

One analyst who criticised McDaniel’s style was Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd. During the seasonhe referred to McDaniel as, “The friendly guy out in Miami, I think he seems like a great guy. I don’t need hugs and pandering and kisses.” Another player whocriticized the Dolphins was former Pro Bowl running back Raheem Mostert, and now a former Dolphins Pro Bowl player has responded to Mostert’s criticism.

Former Miami Dolphins Pro Bowl Receiver Comments on Team Culture

Raheem Mostert criticized McDaniel’s coaching style as he said, “It’s pure: This is how we’re gonna coach it, I’m essentially the ruler. I’m the one that’s making these gains and also the failures. I have to accept that. But when you’re dealing with a coach that’s so nonchalant, laid back, wants to be the catalyst behind being a player’s coach, it kind of shifts that organization in the pivot within that system. So while it can work for other smaller league teams possibly, when you’re dealing with something like that, as a player you’re like, no, I need somebody tough that’s gonna lay the hammer down when it needs to be down and tell other players to get in line.”

In response, former Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry said, “I think it answers the question of like ‘What was the problem with the Miami Dolphins?’ It goes to show you that the problem was also a culture problem. To me this tells me that they didn’t have enough leaders in the locker room. If we’re depending on a coach to lay the hammer down and be this tough presence around the team, it tells me that they didn’t have enough leaders inside of the organization, you know what I mean?”

He added, “I think great teams and great players, they put that on themselves. They lean into being the extension of the coach. The coach is really there to create an environment for people to feel comfortable under pressure. Like. I’m not saying the coach is not gonna hold you accountable, but the coach shouldn’t have to yell.”

Landry’s Desire to Return

This is not the first time Landry has commented on the Dolphins recently. He recently replied on social media that he could be anoption for the Dolphins offense.

Landry has not played since the 2022 season, when he was a member of the New Orleans Saints; however, he has not officially retired. Landry spent the first four years of his career with the Dolphins, after being drafted in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

During his four-year tenure with the Dolphins, Landry made the Pro Bowl three times. He also set the franchise record for receptions twice, although his Dolphins records have since been broken by All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill.
