The Green Bay Packers still need a QB to replace Malik Willis, but before worrying about who will play behind Jordan Love, the franchise must concern itself with who he will throw to all season long.

Green Bay said goodbye to Romeo Doubs in free agency, as the New England Patriots signed the former fourth-round wide receiver to a $68 million deal.

Meanwhile, tight end Tucker Kraft continues recovering from an ACL tear he suffered during the middle of the 2025 campaign, though appears to be on track to return for Week 1. His loss proved a catastrophic blow, and another seven missed games for wideout Christian Watson led to the Packers’ offense looking somewhat anemic during the dog days of the campaign.

Matt Schneidman of The Athletic wrote on Thursday, March 19 that both Kraft and Watson are top extension priorities in Green Bay. However, given Watson’s troublesome history of injuries over the course of his career (20 missed games out of 68 possible), along with Kraft’s issues in 2025 and Doubs’ exit, the Packers should be in the market for another quality target.

Schneidman mentioned former Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku as a “bargain bin” candidate to fill that role as Kraft’s backup TE. However, if the Packers would rather swing bigger, wideout Stefon Diggs is on the market following his release from New England.

Diggs is who the Patriots signed Doubs to replace after New England inked Diggs to a $63.5 million contract heading into 2025. That deal was supposed to last for three years, but the Patriots cut Diggs this offseason in the interest of salary cap savings and going younger at the position.

A four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, Diggs was a high-caliber receiver with the Minnesota Vikings for the first five years of his career before exploding into stardom as a member of the Buffalo Bills.

He missed nine games in 2024 with an ACL tear after a strong start to his sole campaign with the Houston Texans. Diggs then offered Drake Maye a reliable target in the pass game during the QB’s second pro campaign, finishing with over 1,000 receiving yards for the seventh-time in his 11-year NFL tenure and helping New England make it all the way to the Super Bowl in February.

Diggs finished last season fifth in voting for the league’s Comeback Player of the Year award.

Romeo Doubs Was Packers’ Most Reliable WR Over Past Few Years

Diggs’ best days are behind him, and there are analysts who contend Doubs will be better in an expanded role as a 25-year-old in New England next season than Diggs would have been at 32 (he turns 33 in late November) — at least at their respective cap holds.

That may be correct, but Diggs can offer some depth and experience to a Packers’ receiver room that needs both after Jayden Reed also missed 10 games last season with injuries and rookie Matthew Golden wasn’t the home run the team hoped it was hitting in the first round.

Golden finished the year with 29 catches for 361 yards in 14 games played (five starts), and he has yet to find the end zone.

Despite his run-ins with franchise higher-ups and his middling statistical production, Doubs was the most reliable pass-catcher for Love over the past few years.

A healthy Diggs could replace him at a market value of $13.8 million annually over a new two-year contract, per Spotrac. As of Thursday, the Packers had $22.1 million in space.
