Seahawks GM John Schneider on RB hole: 'That's a position that you can find guys'

The Seattle Seahawks might have a hole at running back entering the season, but general manager John Schneider isn't fretting.

With Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III signing in Kansas City and Zach Charbonnet coming off a knee injury that likely won't have him ready for Week 1, the Seahawks don't have a clear No. 1 back. Their current options are former undrafted free agent George Holani, free agent Emanuel Wilson, who signed after three seasons as a backup in Green Bay, Cam Akers, who has bounced around the past several years, former seventh-rounder Kenny McIntosh, coming off injury, and converted receiver Velus Jones

For Schneider, the position is closer to a hole in the brick that can be plugged rather than a foundational issue that could cripple the house.

"That's a position that you can find guys," Schneider said of running backs on his weekly show on Seattle Sports. "And obviously, (Walker was) outstanding, and everybody's really excited for him. I mean, that's a great, great contract for a running back. But George did a great job. We're really excited about Emmanuel Wilson, who we got from Green Bay, a heavy runner with really nice feet.

"Just to kind of quell people, at this time of the year, I get it. But like, (Charbonnet) is doing great. Kenny McIntosh, he had a great (2024) season, and that was just an awful injury for him. But I get it. And it's a position that … we know where we're at right now."

Scheider noted his history of finding backs, going back to his days in Green Bay, when the Packers acquired Ryan Grant in a trade before the start of the 2007 season, who then went on to have three straight 900-plus-yard rushing seasons.

The GM pointed to the depth of the current backfield, indicating his belief that the coaching staff can coax production even if Charbonnet is slowed to start the season. Schenider particularly glowed about Holani, who, as it stands right now, would have a significant role.

"George is one of those guys that just does everything really well," Schneider said on Thursday. "He catches the ball, pass protection, doesn't put the ball on the ground, really good instincts and he's a true pro. Like, he's just got a great personality."

The Seahawks could still draft a running back early, but it's clearly not a top-of-mind concern that is keeping Schneider up at night.
