The Premier League title race often produces heated exchanges between managers during intense matches. Fabian Hurzeler recently made headlines by criticizing the tactical approach of Arsenal. However, the young Brighton manager has now chosen to make amends by sending a personal message to clarify his response.
A Peace Offering From Fabian Hurzeler
Speaking at a press conference on 13 March 2026, Fabian Hurzeler confirmed that he contacted the Arsenal manager directly. The young coach described Mikel Arteta as a role model and a significant influence on his own career. As per reports, he sent a text message to clarify his previous public criticisms.
“I texted him and I said the same thing to him as well, that I have huge respect for everyone from Arsenal. Arteta is one of the best managers in the world for me, he is a role model, but it is important to say your opinion and not hide your opinion.”
The manager also admitted that his post-match comments were fuelled by emotions. He still stands by his opinion about the game needing stricter rules regarding time management.
During the last game with the north London club, Brighton lost the match by only a single goal. However, after the match, Hurzeler accused them of making their own rules due to alleged time-wasting tactics. He furiously claimed that only one team tried to play football.
Moreover, the Brighton boss said that he would never manage a side to win in such a manner. He argued that fans deserve more than fifty minutes of active play. He urged the Premier League to enforce stricter rules.
Touchline Tension Between Mikel Arteta And Fabian Hurzeler
The tension between the two managers peaked during a match on Matchweek 29. Arsenal took the lead in the 9th minute through a deflected strike from Bukayo Saka. From that point, the league leaders focused on defensive stability and aggressive control of the game.
Brighton held the ball for long periods, but the Gunners adopted a no-nonsense approach. The Gunners kept disturbing the match flow with slow restarts throughout. Just before the second half started, they got together for a team huddle just to slow down the start. Hurzeler was certainly not happy.
Also during the first half midway, Mikel Arteta was angrily pointing a finger towards Hurzeler. This incident took place after the Brighton boss’s frequent complaints to the fourth official. Arsenal keeper David Raya’s antics further annoyed Hurzeler. The keeper kept going down several times. He had to get medical attention in the second half, which delayed the play.
After the game, Fabian Hurzeler hit back at his opponents in the press conference. Mikel Arteta, however, gave a short and dismissive reply:
“What a surprise. You just go back to the previous games and you’ll find a lot of comments like this always. I love my players”.
The Truth Behind The Time-Wasting Debate
The numbers tell a more detailed story as the match took place. The ball was in play for about 53 minutes and 58 seconds, which is 53.5% of the total match time. This figure was in fact close to the Premier League average of 55.3% for this season.
Arsenal averaged 31.4 seconds for each restart against Brighton, which was only a little above their season average. Also, five other clubs in the division take longer over their restarts on average than the league’s current leaders.
The Gunners’ methods this season have been disapproved by many observers and pundits. Former Man United midfielder Paul Scholes claimed that they would be the most boring team to win the title. Despite the widespread noise, Mikel Arteta remains firm in his mindset and backs his squad’s output.
“I hear completely the opposite: all around Europe that we are the most exciting team in Europe, the most goals, the most clean sheets.” – Arteta stated.
For now, the tension may have cooled, but the debate over Arsenal’s approach is far from over.
