We hear a lot in sport these days about ‘the Red Zone’ – a term coined from the NFL regarding the last 20 yards, the area of the pitch where you expect to get ‘an outcome’. It’s the place you create results.
Off the pitch, when you pick up a sporting injury, you want exactly the same, to create positive results. In which case it’s worth looking at a different ‘red zone’ – in this case the Infra-Red zone.
Infra-Red radiation penetrates deep into muscles and tissues, reducing inflammation, and increasing blood flow, making it highly effective for sports injury recovery. It directly targets sore muscles and damaged tissues, promoting accelerated cellular repair.
This makes it particularly useful for soft-tissue injury recovery such as pulled muscles and, as it promotes enhanced blood circulation it also aids white tissue injury recovery for tendons and ligaments.
Perhaps the easiest way of accessing Infra-Red therapy is through sessions in an Infra-Red sauna. It’s a very different experience to a traditional sauna where the temperature is raised using an electric heater or wood burning stove to between 70°c to 90°c to promote cleansing sweating. Many saunas also use steam to dial-up the effect and some people find this heat and humidity overwhelming.
With Infra-Red the temperature doesn’t need to be so hot – typically around 55°c. Infra-Red radiation plays directly on to the skin (it’s like sitting in the sun) and cleansing sweating starts within a few minutes, the heat penetrating deep into the epidermis. If you’re used to a traditional sauna where the heat rises, it’s quite a remarkable feeling as the effect from Infra-Red is all over the body, all at once.
In addition, beyond physical tissue recovery, an Infra-Red sauna is wonderfully de-stressing, which means that factors which play a crucial role in overall exercise performance and recovery, such as sleep patterns and overall mood tend to improve,
There are not many Infra-Red saunas in the Horsham area yet, and Warnham might not be the first place you think of as thriving hub of sports injury rehab technology. However, the forward-looking management of the Bodywise Boutique Wellness have installed a state-of-the-art Infra-Red sauna cabin in a dedicated therapy room.
It’s a private space with power shower and towels, hair dryer, two beds (the sauna is ideal for couples as well as individuals) to relax on, comfy chairs, herbal tea, and water to rehydrate. Best of all for athletes and sports players looking to recuperate, membership of the gym is not required. One-off sessions can be booked in advance at the cost of £30 for one person or £50 for a couple. www.bodwise.co.uk
