The Golden State Warriors are in the middle of a difficult road trip, but Thursday night brought a pause from the basketball for something more personal.
Stephen Curry and Seth Curry were both in Charlotte as their father Dell had his No. 30 retired by the Hornets at halftime of their game against the Orlando Magic. It was a night four decades in the making, honouring one of the most beloved players in franchise history and a man who helped shape two NBA careers that followed.
Seth stepped up to the microphone. What followed was memorable.

The speech was warm, personal, and exactly what you would expect from a family that has never taken itself too seriously despite everything it has achieved. Seth looked out at the crowd, reflected on growing up with that number on the back of his father’s jersey, and delivered a line that landed perfectly.
“Growing up, that No. 30, nobody really wanted to wear it, to be honest,” Seth said. “Now, it’s iconic, mainly because of the blue and yellow.”
The blue and yellow, of course, belongs to Golden State. The implication was clear. Dell made the number iconic in Charlotte. Steph took it somewhere else entirely.
Seth wore No. 30 himself for stretches of his own career, including a season with the Hornets in 2024-25. He knows exactly what that number means and where it has been.

Stephen Curry was not at the microphone on Thursday night, but he made sure to mark the occasion in his own way. After the ceremony, he posted a tribute to his father on Instagram.
“A special night for the Curry family,” Steph wrote. “The originator is in the rafters forever. Congratulations, Dad.”
The originator. That word choice said everything. Dell Curry spent 10 seasons in Charlotte and became one of the most accurate shooters the league had seen at the time. What his sons went on to do with that foundation is a testament to what he built. Seth carved out a lengthy, respected NBA career. Steph won four championships and built a case as one of the greatest players the game has ever seen.
No. 30 will never be worn again in Charlotte. It will not be worn again in Golden State either, when that day eventually comes. Dell started something that neither building will ever let go of.
Final Word for the Warriors
Steph called his father the originator. Seth joked that nobody wanted the number growing up. Dell Curry built a legacy in Charlotte that his sons carried into every corner of the NBA. Thursday night was the city’s way of making that permanent.
The number is in the rafters. The story keeps going.
