Player preparing for big transfer to Chelsea – Learning English and getting to know London

Geovany Quenda

Chelsea are already shaping Geovany Quenda’s transition to England, with the winger now preparing for life in London while still technically at Sporting.

The 18-year-old is expected to return to Lisbon at the end of March. However, his recent routine shows Chelsea’s influence starts way before the summer.

As we covered earlier, the Premier League side have kept Quenda at Cobham to complete his recovery and begin adapting him to his future surroundings.

That includes learning English and getting familiar with the city where he will soon be based.

Recovery, routine and early adaptation

Geovany Quenda has spent the past months recovering from a fractured fifth metatarsal suffered in late November. The injury required surgery in London, shortly before Christmas, after Chelsea had already agreed a deal worth £43.5m (€50.7m) for the winger.

Since then, his rehabilitation has been structured in phases, as detailed by Record in Portugal. First, he worked on mobility in the affected foot. Then came stabilisation exercises, followed by strength work and a gradual return to the pitch.

Now in the final stage, Chelsea have decided to keep him in England rather than sending him back early to Sporting.

In recent days, Quenda has been training in the afternoons at Cobham alongside a physiotherapist. Interestingly, that same specialist is also working with Caleb Wiley, another Chelsea player currently out on loan.

Away from the pitch, the winger has started to build his new routine. According to Record, he spends mornings studying English, while also getting to know London ahead of his permanent move.

Chelsea are also supporting his off-field setup. Meals are prepared by the club, and he has already begun early commercial activities, including work linked to Nike.

Timed return for decisive weeks

Despite the extended stay in England, Geovany Quenda is still expected to return to Sporting during the international break.

That timing is not accidental. Sporting are entering a crucial period of the season, with domestic fixtures and a Champions League double-header against Arsenal scheduled for April 7 and 14.

Portuguese manager Rui Borges is also dealing with fresh concerns in attack, with winger Luís Guilherme facing a potential month out due to injury. As a result, Quenda’s return could come at an important moment.

From Chelsea’s perspective, this is about more than just fitness. They want the winger to arrive in Lisbon ready to contribute immediately, both physically and tactically.

Why Chelsea are taking control

Geovany Quenda

Chelsea’s decision to keep Geovany Quenda in London highlights how highly they rate him.

The club are not just protecting their investment. They are actively managing his development, even while he is still playing elsewhere.

By combining recovery with cultural adaptation, Chelsea are effectively accelerating his integration before he officially joins the squad.

If all goes to plan, Quenda will return to Sporting fully fit and ready for decisive matches. At the same time, he will already be one step closer to his next chapter in England.
