Could a New England Patriots–Stefon Diggs reunion be in the works? First things First thinks it may be a possibility. Analyst Danny Parkins believes the Patriots could bring back a familiar face should an AA. J. Brown pursuit not work out.
Stefon Diggs was released by the Patriots in March. He broke his silence via an Instagram post, and has since been inactive on social media. Diggs recorded 85 catches for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns this past season.
A Patriots Reunion Could Be Possible
Executive Vice President of player personnel Eliot Wolf did not exactly shut down the idea of Diggs returning to the Patriots earlier this month. A reunion could be in the cards. Parkins believes that’s exactly what could happen should the Patriots fail in the pursuit of Brown.
“The flirting of him and New England as soon as he left, I think he’s gonna go back!… I think New England is gonna be in on the A.J. Brown sweepstakes in a post-June world and now Stefon Diggs is the fallback plan.”
The wide receiver would certainly not be the worst fallback plan for the Patriots. He is coming off his seventh career 1,000-yard season, and was the leading receiver for the Patriots last year. Off-the-field issues have raised a bit of a question mark. However, speaking strictly from a football perspective he could be a valuable piece if he were welcomed back.
On the Brown front, the Patriots and the Eagles seem to be waiting for the other team to make a move. It was reported on Thursday that both the teams were in a bit of a ‘staring’ contest. MassLive’s Karen Guregian reported this. The thinking is that they will eventually come to terms on a deal, with no specific timeline.
The Patriots made an effort to upgrade their wide receiver room this offseason. They added former Green Bay Packers wideout Romeo Doubs. The latter is an explosive playmaker who is coming off a season that saw him record 724 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He could be a valuable piece of the offense moving forward. However, Brown would give the Patriots organization a top weapon and a dynamic playmaker.
Patriots-Related Video Sparks Interest
Of course, there is also the recent workout video that has garnered speculation as well. Brown was seen working out with former teammate Kevin Byard, who is now a member of the Patriots. Brown and Byard go as far back as the Tennessee Titans. They also overlapped with the Philadelphia Eagles. The pictures certainly did nothing to quiet the rumors.
In any event, it seems like the Patriots will not be done adding to their wide receiver room. Whether it be Diggs or Brown, the Patriots may have a plan in place. It just might end up taking a little bit longer than expected. The Patriots have had a busy offseason, and it’s one that may extend into the summer. This would definitely be a unique situation, but getting either receiver would be something worth waiting for, and give Drake Maye a weapon.
