The Patriots have been linked to trade rumors surrounding Tyreek Hill

New England Patriots safety Kevin Byard sat down for an interview with NFL reporter Jordan Schultz earlier this week. During the interview, he detailed the hardest practice he’s ever had. Safe to say, it wasn’t with the Patriots.

Byard has been a part of three teams. The Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Chicago Bears were all stops along his journey. He was with Patriots coach Mike Vrabel for several seasons with the Titans, and experienced tremendous success under the coach.

One would think that a Vrabel-led Titans practice would be in contention for the hardest one he’s ever had. However, it wasn’t Vrabel that had the toughest practice. Ben Johnson had the toughest practice, and for Byard it wasn’t much of a stretch to say that.

“Out of my 10 years being in the NFL, the hardest training camp I’ve ever had. And I wasn’t expecting that from him. You know what I mean? Because you think if an offensive guy’s… right, we’re gonna roll. You know what I mean? Like everything’s kind of smooth. I don’t want guys to get hurt.”

“When you look back at it, it was so worth it. We needed that tough training camp.”

Byard played under Johnson last season, as the veteran safety was in his second season in Chicago. Byard played well, recording 93 tackles, eight passes defensed, and seven interceptions. There was a mutual respect between both Johnson and Byard. Both fed off each other, and safety was able to play at a high level.

The difficult practices certainly paid off last season for Chicago. They went 11-6 last season and finished first in the NFC North. They rebounded from a 5-12 record in 2024, with a six-win improvement. The Bears won the wild-card game first against the Green Bay Packers. However, they lost in the divisional round against the Los Angeles Rams.

Nevertheless, Byard and Johnson were able to help lead the Bears to new heights.

Patriots Getting Seasoned Veteran In Byard

It appears that mutual respect is there between the Patriots coach and Byard as well. The coach was complimentary of the safety back in 2023. Vrabel cited Byard’s willingness to carry a new message into the locker room and establish a mindset and work ethic within the organization.

The Patriots are getting a tough, hard-nosed player in Byard. It’s clear that he likes to be coached at a high-level. It is also clear that he is able to elevate a locker room and provide a veteran presence that’s needed for the organization. Particularly for the Bears, that veteran experience was invaluable. Now, he will bring that to the Patriots and help instill a culture.

Byard Should Fit Patriots’ Culture

The New England culture is very similar in terms of being disciplined and physical. In that way, Byard should fit right in. The Patriots already have a promising safety in Craig Woodson for Byard to mentor and help carry that winning culture into the locker room. It will be interesting to see what impact he has on the Patriots organization and how he will leave his mark.
