Warriors Announce Kristaps Porzingis News After Leaving Pistons Game

The Golden State Warriors have struggled to remain in contention in the Western Conference without the services of superstar point guard Stephen Curry, who has not appeared in game action since January.

To make matters worse, Kristaps Porzingis, acquired at the trade deadline from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield, has appeared in just six total games for the organization due to illness.

The 30‑year‑old big man was expected to provide stability and emerge as a reliable offensive option, yet he has barely been on the court.

This year, Porzingis has seen a dip in production, averaging 17.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists while shooting 45.1% from the field and 34.2% from beyond the arc. His struggles likely stem from his lack of availability more than anything else.

Porzingis was able to suit up on Friday against the Detroit Pistons, looking to help the Warriors get back on track.

He got off to a rough start shooting the basketball, scoring just five points in his first 11 minutes while going one‑for‑five from the field. He did add three rebounds and two blocks.

However, midway through the second quarter, Porzingis unexpectedly headed back to the locker room after being subbed out. He did not return before halftime, immediately raising concern.

Moments later, the Warriors announced an update on his status, saying he was questionable to return due to lower back soreness. As the team wrote on X, "Kristaps Porzingis (lower back soreness) is questionable to return to tonight's game vs. Detroit."

This is impactful because the Warriors simply cannot afford to lose Porzingis right now. With Curry still sidelined, Porzingis is one of the few proven veterans capable of carrying offensive stretches, and he has not played enough games to fully mesh with Golden State's young core. Any additional setback only delays that process and further complicates the team's already fragile rotation.

When the Warriors traded for Porzingis, they knew it was a risk given his injury history, but the upside, a former All‑Star and key contributor to the Boston Celtics' 2024 NBA Finals run, made it worth the gamble to maximize Curry's window. Now that risk is becoming more apparent, and this latest injury only heightens the concern.

Golden State has lost eight of its last 10 games, and while there is no real danger of falling out of the play‑in race, the team still hopes to climb the standings and improve its postseason position. Porzingis' health may ultimately determine whether that climb is even possible.
