JJ Gabriel is the next rising star coming out of Manchester United's academy, with Arsenal's Max Dowman having been through a similar situation

JJ Gabriel may be one of England's brightest prospects right now, but he is currently unable to appear for Manchester United due to his age.
In order to participate in England's top flight, players will have turned 15 years old before August 31 meaning Gabriel is yet to be able to make the step-up to the United first-team. This is a similar situation to Arsenal's Max Dowman, who has recently made his breakthrough for the Gunners.
Dowman made history by scoring against Everton last weekend and becoming the youngest player in history to find the net in the Premier League. The 16-year-old broke Cesc Fabregas' record for Arsenal and is thriving in north London.
But there was a time where he couldn't appear for the Gunners' first-team, due to a Premier League rule banning those under the age of 16. Dowman didn't meet the strict age criteria in 2024 so, the teenager had to wait until August 2025 to make his debut in the Premier League for Arsenal, coming on against Leeds United and winning a penalty in the same game.
Now, Gabriel will have to follow these same rules and wait for his time to perform for United at the top level. He has already been training with the first team and fans are clamouring for him to start.
But the fact that the teenager only turned 15 last October has stopped him from making a matchday squad. There is a remarkably small window in which Gabriel can break a record that has stood for almost 70 years.

When the 2026/27 season begins, the youngster will have around eight weeks to make his debut and surpass former United goalkeeper David Gaskell's record. The shotstopper was just 16 years and 19 days old when he made his official bow in the 1956 FA Charity Shield - now known as the Community Shield.
This means Gabriel will have to continue his red-hot form, avoid any injuries and impress the new United boss in the summer enough to be called up. Gabriel has 15 goals in 20 appearances for the under-18s across all competitions this season and has earned three caps for England's under-16s.
Current interim boss Michael Carrick has been impressed by the teenager as he confirmed Gabriel's ban from Premier League action ahead of their trip to Bournemouth. He said: "He's not allowed, he's too young.
"He's doing really well, JJ. We've got some really good young players in the academy and we try and get the younger players up [with the first-team] as much as we can.
"We're always trying to give that exposure to the players to come and train and feel it."
