Keith Hackett has called for the Premier League to be transparent after Everton boss David Moyes questioned Chelsea’s punishment.

Chelsea were fined by the Premier League and given a suspended transfer ban for £47.5m worth of secret agent-related payments between 2011 and 2018.

Everton were given a total of eight points deducted on two separate occasions for breaching Profit and Sustainability regulations.

Everton fans have been left outraged about Chelsea’s punishment, feeling that it does not fairly reflect their actions after the Toffees’ previous sanctions.

What did Moyes say about Chelsea punishment?

Moyes questioned the Premier League’s handling of the Chelsea case, comparing it to Everton’s situation, which ultimately saw the Blues deducted points.

Players Fee

Ramires £17m

David Luiz £21.3m

Eden Hazard £32m

Andre Schurrle £18m

Samuel Eto’o Free

Willian £30m

Nemanja Matic £21m

He asked for further explanation over the process that saw the Stamford Bridge side handed a fine rather than points coming off their total.

In his press conference ahead of the contest, he said: “I would actually like to hear a bit more about it.

“I’m expecting more of the details and why – and this isn’t against Chelsea as I wasn’t at Everton at the time we were deducted a huge points number.

“I don’t think they have explained it well enough in the reasoning what the fine was and why it was.

“I think it would be good if we heard a little bit more how they got to that decision of fine with Chelsea rather than a points deduction, for example.”

What did Hackett say about Moyes’ comments?

Hackett thinks that Moyes was right to ask the question, and he should not face any punishment for doing so.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, he said: “He has asked a question that many people would like answering in detail.

“It would be helpful to the game

“Transparency on the matter would help the understanding of the rules and regulations.

“What changes have been made to the rules that regulate these matters in recent times.

“I don’t think that David Moyes should be sanctioned in any way, he has raised a question, let’s hope that he gets an answer.”

Why Everton have every right to be angry

Everton have every right to be furious with the fact that the West London side have not received similar punishment.

After their PSR breaches in 2024, the Blues were told that financial penalties were not proportionate due to their backing from a wealthy owner.

Despite the fact that they have much wealthier owners, and benefited in a sporting sense, Chelsea got away with what many have perceived to be a slap on the wrist.

The sanction handed out to the Blues is not seen as a real punishment or even really a deterrent, while the Toffees were dealt with very harshly.

It is likely not the last time we hear about the situation, given how unfair it all seems to the Merseyside club.

Luckily, the Friedkin Group have ensured that the L4 outfit are unlikely to be in the same position again, as they have shown an ability to strike commercial deals and put the club on a solid financial footing after years of misery.
