Aston Villa will reportedly look to sign 25-year-old Spanish centre-back Mario Gila from Serie A club Lazio in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Aston Villa and Chelsea are interested in Mario Gila. The two Premier League clubs are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 25-year-old Lazio defender has emerged as a target for them.
The latest report has revealed that the Villans are ready to submit a bid worth around €30 million to sign the Spaniard in the summer transfer window, and the offer “would be difficult to ignore” for Lazio. Meanwhile, Gila is “tempted by” the opportunity to join the West Midlands outfit in the coming months.
How has Mario Gila fared at Lazio?
Mario Gila has established himself as one of the most dependable defenders in Serie A since joining Lazio from Real Madrid in July 2022. Born in Barcelona, the 25-year-old spent his formative years in Spain, passing through the academies at Santa Perpetua de Moguda, Sabadell, Mollet, and CF Damm before graduating from the youth division at Real Madrid.
However, the Spanish defender could not establish a foothold in the first-team squad at Real Madrid, and the move to Lazio has helped him rise in prominence. Gila has over 100 outings for the Serie A outfit thus far while chipping in with two goals. Meanwhile, Gila’s progress at the Italian club has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs, including Aston Villa and Chelsea.
Premier League adventure beckons?
Aston Villa’s interest in Mario Gila is understandable. The West Midlands outfit will dip into the market for a centre-back in the summer transfer window, as Tyrone Mings faces an uncertain future at Villa Park heading into the summer transfer window. So, the Villans are eager to sign a centre-back in the coming months, with Gila emerging as a viable target.
As for Chelsea, Axel Disasi has no future at the West London club, while Benoit Badiashile may depart from Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window. So, the Blues are keen on signing a centre-back who can be Levi Colwill’s long-term central defensive partner. Gila is thus an option worth considering.
