Darius Acuff Jr. NBA Mock Draft scouting report: Elite offense and shaky defense leads to polarizing opinions

Darius Acuff Jr. is an obvious talent who has put up great production as Arkansas' best player this year. He's had some crazy scoring binges in high-pressure situations, including 49 against Alabama on only 27 shots and 37 in the SEC tournament against Oklahoma. What's not to like?

Acuff looks fantastic on film and highlights. There are other flaws in his game though that are tougher to see. Those under-the-surface negatives have some draft analysts lower on his NBA projection. Here's the full scouting report on his game.

Darius Acuff Jr. strengths

Acuff might be the best shot-maker in college basketball right now. He is a fantastic three-level scorer that will wow you with his talent.

His 3-point shooting has been electric this year, where he's hit 44.5 percent on some pretty tough attempts. His catch-and-shoot numbers are very impressive. He's at 49.1 percent on those shots, including a scorching 62.5 percent on unguarded 3's. He simply does not miss when he's open.

Acuff doesn't have a crazy first step, but he's been able to get to the paint at a good rate and finish at an okay 57.8 percent clip at the rim. He's not a killer athlete, which makes it a bit tougher when he goes up against the trees.

Acuff has fantastic passing vision when he does break down the defense. He has good awareness in the pick-and-roll, and his 2.2 turnovers per game are pretty low given the high usage role that he has. He is an even better passer in transition, where he always looks to get the ball down the floor quickly.

Acuff is an elite lob thrower. If he's paired with a rim-running big man, good luck stopping that attack.

17.5% of Acuff’s total assists have been lobs during his freshman campaign. The touch, timing, creativity, degree of difficulty on some of these lobs is top tier stuff. Just an incredibly dynamic offensive player. pic.twitter.com/izgUjczPaf

Acuff also has good intangibles going for him. He never seems to fade in the biggest moments, playing under control and dominating.

All in all, Acuff is everything you'd want from a lead guard in the NBA as far as being the engine of a good offense. He's been wildly productive at a young age, which is promising for his translation to the next level. It's the other end of the floor that is more concerning.

Darius Acuff Jr. weaknesses

Nobody is doubting that Acuff is going to be a great offensive weapon. But can he survive defensively in the NBA? He's a small guard who is going to be targeted constantly. Those types of players are being phased out more and more.

Acuff can survive, but he needs to be tough and care in order to make up for his physical limitations. At Arkansas, he's done the opposite. He gives almost zero effort on or off the ball. He's bad at getting around screens, oftentimes giving up completely on plays. He switches assignments seemingly randomly, confusing his teammates and breaking down his team's defensive schemes. And he can't stay in front of anyone.

I heard that Darius Acuff Jr. might be the worst defender in the NBA next year. Watched his defense during the SEC Championship to see if people were exaggerating.

How many of those defensive warts are from the offensive load that he had to carry at Arkansas? How much did a nagging ankle injury suffered in February affect his mobility? Are his issues fixable? Those are the questions that teams are asking themselves.

If this were 10 years ago, Acuff would be a no-brainer top-five pick that you'd hand the keys of an offense to. The NBA has changed though. Despite fans thinking there is no defense played, the rotations are in reality extremely high level. One weak link can sabotage a possession.

Acuff is going to be that weak link. He needs to be a top 10 offensive player in the league to make up for how bad he projects to be on the other end of the floor.

Mock Draft projection: Between No. 5 and No. 10 overall picks

Acuff isn't breaking into the top three of AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Cameron Boozer. Caleb Wilson is a strong No. 4. After that, it's wide open for him.

If there is a team like Brooklyn, Sacramento, Utah, or Dallas that ends up in that No. 5 slot, then it's conceivable that they could take a shot on Acuff. Anyone who doesn't have "the guy" on their team could let him fill that role.

Most mocks have Acuff going around the No. 7 or 8 pick, although Sporting News' Elliott Pohnl likes him a bit more than that.

Darius Acuff Jr. NBA player comparison

Plays like: Tyrese Maxey

Maxey has survived as a 6-2 guard in the NBA, making two All-Star games. His combination of pull up shooting, speed, and finishing ability has him as a top 15 offensive player in the league. He's become a better playmaker, capitalizing off all of the attention he receives with the ball.

Defensively, he's survived despite his small stature. He's got good hands and at least gives decent effort.

Acuff can have that same type of role as a lead guard who is good enough defensively to survive.

If Acuff does struggle defensively and hits one of his low-end offensive projections, another NBA comp for him could be a guard like Collin Sexton. Sexton has been a big-time scorer in the NBA, but his impact has been limited due to his poor defense.

If Acuff hits the top of his offensive potential, he could be the Jalen Brunson of this class. He has that much talent. That is a pretty wide range of player, which is why he is one of the more difficult players in this draft cycle to evaluate.
