Mario Gila
Chelsea have become the latest club to join the race to sign Lazio’s Mario Gila in the summer window.
The centre-back graduated from Real Madrid’s youth system but couldn’t cement a place with their first team. Therefore, the La Liga side sold him to Lazio in July 2022 for €6m.
He’s played 113 matches for the Serie A side and recent performances have seen several clubs, including Chelsea, show interest.
This season, 25-year-old Gila played 2,474 minutes from 29 matches and 26 were in the league. To give an idea of what makes him attractive, we provide some of his data per game from Serie A this season.
Starts: 26
Clean Sheets: 7
Interceptions: 0.9
Tackles: 1.6
Ball recovery: 4.5
Ground duels won: 2.6
Aerial duels won: 2.1
Clearances: 4.0
Dribbled past: 0.4
Errors leading to goal: 0
The Spaniard has already attracted interest from multiple clubs for a potential move after this season.
Earlier this month, Sport Witness covered claims from Italy that Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Everton are in the picture. On Friday, we relayed news that €30m would be enough for the Villans to secure Gila’s services.
Chelsea in running to sign Gila
Roma’s edition of La Repubblica report Liam Rosenier’s side are also keen on bringing him to the Premier League.
Their title reads: ‘Lazio, everyone’s crazy about Gila: Milan, Inter, Chelsea, and Atlético Madrid are after the defender’
Within the report, La Repubblica explain how the former Real Madrid man’s situation has changed in recent years.
He almost went unnoticed initially at Lazio and is now on the agenda of Chelsea, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid and other clubs.
Therefore, Lazio seem confident ‘offers will be pouring in’ after this season and need at least €30m.
Mario Gila currently earns €1.1m per year with the Biancocelesti and wants €4m net annually from his next club.
At this moment in time, Milan are the favourite, while Inter Milan, the Blues, Atlético and Aston Villa are also ‘in the running’.

Defender’s contract, value and agent info
The fee and the salary demand make it affordable for Chelsea, but there’s no indication of Gila’s preference among these clubs.
He has a contract until 2027 and Transfermarkt value him at €30m, the base fee set by Lazio.
Agency Football ISM, led by agent Alejandro Camaño, take care of the player’s interest.
