Ivan Fresneda
Newcastle United are among the clubs closely watching Sporting full-back Iván Fresneda, and the timing may be ideal as the 21-year-old hits peak form in the Champions League.
The Magpies have already been linked with the Spanish defender in recent weeks. Now it looks like the interest is well placed, with Fresneda delivering performances designed to catch Premier League attention.
Tactical growth and Champions League impact
Fresneda’s rise this season has followed a clear pattern. Manager Rui Borges’ switch to a 4-2-3-1 system gave him stability and minutes at right-back. Since then, he has developed into one of Sporting’s most consistent performers.
However, his display against Bodø/Glimt may have taken things to another level. Fresneda covered 16.94 kilometres across 120 minutes in the 5-0 win. That made him the top runner on the pitch, more than one kilometre ahead of the next player.
He also made a direct impact. The right-back won a penalty, constantly provided width, and combined defensive aggression with attacking intent. The Portuguese newspaper rated him 9/10.
That performance did not go unnoticed, especially by Newcastle United.
Premier League clubs watching closely
Portuguese newspaperA Bola confirmed that several English clubs are following Fresneda closely. Newcastle United are one of them, alongside Arsenal.
Importantly, Arsenal will get a direct look soon. Sporting face them in the Champions League quarter-finals in April. Those matches could act as a live audition. Strong displays would likely push his value even higher.
Fresneda himself acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying after the Bodø/Glimt win: “It will be a difficult game like others we have had in this competition. We will meet Viktor again, I am very happy to have him back at this stadium and now we will see what happens.”
€80m clause – but room to negotiate
Sporting are fully aware of the growing interest.
Fresneda is under contract until 2028 and has an €80m (£69m) release clause. Still, earlier reporting from Portugal indicates the club are open to negotiating below that figure this summer.
That creates a more accessible pathway for Newcastle United. The Portuguese side signed him from Real Valladolid for €9m (£7.8m) in 2023. Therefore, even a reduced fee would represent a major profit.

For Newcastle United, the situation is developing at the right moment.
Fresneda is gaining momentum, both domestically and in Europe. At the same time, Sporting are preparing for a potential sale and feel covered in his position. That combination often accelerates deals.
The next step is clear. Newcastle do not need to rush, but they will be watching closely when Sporting face Arsenal.
If Fresneda delivers again on that stage, interest could quickly turn into something more concrete.
