What Everton fans chanted about Chelsea and the Premier League

Everton fans made themselves heard on Saturday evening after the Premier League opted not to deduct points from Chelsea for breaching financial rules, despite doing exactly that to the Toffees twice during the 2023/24 campaign.

Supporters protested against the fact Chelsea escaped with nothing more than a £10.75m fine and a suspended transfer ban due to secret payments made under Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea were deemed not to have gained a sporting advantage – which is why no points were deducted – despite these payments helping them to sign Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto’o and Andreas Christensen.

In the aftermath of that verdict, Everton fans could be heard chanting “Premier League, corrupt as ****” during the clash against the west Londoners, also booing the travelling Chelsea supporters.

David Moyes himself voiced discontent at the inconsistency shown by the Premier League in terms of punishments for financial breaches. In his press conference before the clash against Chelsea, the Glaswegian said: “I don’t think they have explained it well enough in the reasoning what the fine was and why it was. I think they have to explain exactly what has happened here. If they don’t then we are never going to understand their reasoning why.

“This is me not being anything against Chelsea, absolutely not, I’m just saying that everybody would like to know; Everton supporters, for the pain they had to go through when they had a huge points deduction, and other clubs as well.

“Those points deductions may well have been correct, I don’t know, but we need to see what is the difference? What would you rather have, a £10m fine or a ten-point deduction? The money you get for your league place now, that might cover it. It would be good if we could get more of an explanation. How much is the £10m fine having an effect, really?”

The Premier League stated that part of the reason Chelsea were not deducted points was because they displayed “exceptional cooperation throughout the investigation” and reported themselves.

Some leading figures across football have also expressed shock at the punishment – according to Miguel Delaney – so Moyes is not alone in his criticism of the Premier League.
