London City Lionesses fight back to gain a vital point against Chelsea 1-1 (WSL)

The initial shot from substitute Lucia Corrales forced a massive save from Hannah Hampton, but met the head of Goodwin, for her to salvage the draw and scramble the ball into the net in the 82nd minute.

It was Chelsea FC who were first able to break the deadlock in the 22nd minute. A delicate lofted ball from Wieke Kaptein caused London City Lionesses’ backline chaos, where it found Johanna Rytting Kaneryd for her to slot her shot around Elene Lete into the far right corner.

Chelsea started the game in dominant fashion, where London City found it difficult to keep or retain possession. It took almost 15 minutes for the Lionesses to gain some momentum, after the Blues sent waves of attacks, all be it containing no real threat other than the goal.

Once they settled, London City were able to cause Chelsea some nerves and hold their own in large parts today but just lacked the efficiency to convert unlike the away side. Chelsea held a very high line, where London City used this to their advantage on the counterattack.

Head Coach Eder Maestre was seen gesturing for a long ball most of the game, resulting in London City having some big chances of their own. Poppy Pattinson and Nikita Parris often used Kosovare Asllani as a springboard, where Chelsea’s high line was fragile.

The home side clearly identified that long balls were Chelsea’s weakness as they were a real threat today.

At the start of the second-half, London City caused the Chelsea defenders massive problems, where their continuous intent led themselves to have three successive corners in the first five minutes. Sonia Bompastor’s side looked unsteady and nervy.

It was a deserved result for London City as the side were unlucky not to equalise before Goodwin’s goal as in the 74th minute, Julia Roddar’s close ranged shot deflected onto the bar.

After four straight losses, Eder Maestre’s side managed to gain a vital point against second placed Chelsea today. After Everton were defeated by Manchester United 2-1, London City Lionesses will move level with them in seventh.
