Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is getting in on the NCAA tournament and March Madness, even though he’s a football pro. Mahomes, of course, served as the quarterback at Texas Tech University from 2014 to 2016, playing under head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

At Texas Tech, Mahomes played in 32 games, tossed for 11,252 yards and recorded 93 touchdowns before heading to the 2017 NFL draft. The Chiefs drafted him that year, and the rest of NFL history.

Now, Mahomes is recovering from ACL and LCL injuries, shooting to return to the field in time for the Kansas City Chiefs’ start of the 2026-27 season in September. While he’s rehabbing and working out, Mahomes is also commenting on the NCAA tournament and March Madness games.

Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Has a Clear Favorite in NCAA Tournament

On Friday, March 20, Mahomes took to X to comment on March Madness. His posts on social media send a clear message that he’s rooting for Texas Tech with all of his heart.

On the platform, he reposted a message about sophomore guard Christian Anderson and his stellar stats from the tournament. He also shared a post from Texas Tech basketball saying that they’ll see everyone Sunday for their next game.

The No. 5 seed Texas Tech will go up against the No. 4 seed Alabama Crimson Tide on Sunday, March 22. Expect it to be a close game with these seeds so tight.

Mahomes also took to X to celebrate Kentucky’s last-minute win, posting, “Hahah Wow Kentucky,” with laughing emojis.

During that game, Kentucky’s Otega Oweh hit a shot at the end of regulation in the team’s first-round win over Santa Clara, and it was one for the books.

The team was down by three with just a few seconds remaining, and it appeared as if the Wildcats were done, but Oweh stepped it up and saved the team. Mahomes had to give him props online for all to see.

Kansas City Chiefs Coming Up on 2026 NFL Draft

The 2026 NFL draft is just a few weeks ago, set for April 23 to 25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Kansas City Chiefs get to pick earlier in the round than usual, since they had a difficult 2025-26 season.

In a Thursday, March 19 feature for CBS Sports, Josh Edwards names his picks for the draft. He has the Chiefs going early for offensive tackle Francis Mauigoaout of Miami.

“Kansas City is not often in a position to pick in the top 10,” he states in the piece. “The Chiefs need to use that opportunity to add a player at a premium position — offensive line, edge rusher, etc. Jawaan Taylor was released, so the team needs a replacement.”

Edwards adds, “The Chiefs missed out on the top edge rushers but settle for help on the offensive line.”

He, of course, as the Raiders using their top pick to snag Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. “No one’s considering alternatives for Las Vegas. The Tyler Linderbaum signing supports the assumption that Fernando Mendoza will be the No. 1 overall pick, as a veteran center is a huge benefit for a young quarterback,” he states in the feature. “The Raiders need a quarterback, and there’s a player worthy of that selection.”
