Former Commanders TE Makes Surprising Chig Okonkwo Claim

A former Washington Commanders tight end made a surprising claim about $30 million new arrival Chigoziem Okonkwo.

The Washington Commanders paid top dollar in 2026 NFL free agency to make Chigoziem Okonkwo the leader of their tight end room, but that investment was supposed to be made in spite of the player’s perceived limitations, deficiencies surprisingly dismissed by a former member of the franchise.

Ex-Washington tight end Logan Paulsen explained to “Locked on Commanders” host David Harrison why Okonkwo actually has more talent as a blocker than he’s often credited with possessing.

Paulsen revealed, “the thing that kept me watching play after play, after play, with him is how aggressive he was in the run game. People saying ‘Oh, you can’t block.’ An important part of run-blocking is matchup, but when you’re looking at, like, the fundamentals of blocking, like hand placement, hat placement, footwork, Chig’s pretty good in these areas.”

The biggest myth about new #Commanders TE Chig Okonkwo? That he can’t block. 🛑

Former NFL TE Logan Paulsen breaks down why that’s false:

✅ Strong fundamentals (Hand placement, hat, feet)

✅ Highly aggressive finisher in the run game

✅ Wins favorable matchups (wore out

To underline his point, Paulsen went on to recount a game where then-Tennessee Titans starter Okonkwo “absolutely” dominated his blocking assignment against the Jacksonville Jaguars late last season.

This game film and Paulsen’s endorsement may shock some of those who believe 6-foot-3, 238-pound Okonkwo is more big-bodied wide receiver than true tight end. Unleashing a complete skill-set is how the 26-year-old justifies the $30 million he’s due over the next three years, but the Commanders don’t actually need Okonkwo’s blocking to be better than advertised.

Not when his greater value being detached from the line of scrimmage is key to Washington’s usage plan. A plan that can compensate for the team so far being unable to significantly upgrade their options at another key position.

Chig Okonkwo’s Blocking a Mere Bonus

If Okonkwo does bring more muscle to bear in the trenches it will be a mere bonus for the Commanders. Especially when holdovers John Bates and Ben Sinnott are already formidable blockers.

Their expertise in this area is set to influence the plans of new offensive coordinator David Blough. Those plans might involve Sinnott moving to the backfield, leaving Bates to supplement the offensive line.

Using two of his three tight ends in this way would leave Blough to design more plays that lean into Okonkwo’s primary strengths.

Commanders Pursuing Different Strategies at Receiver

Okonkwo knows playing in Blough’s offense can increase his target share. It’s also something the Commanders need to happen because they still haven’t fixed an obvious issue on their wideout depth chart.

The problem stems from the lack of a credible supporting act for go-to wide receiver Terry McLaurin. It doesn’t help All-Pro roving target Deebo Samuel is still a free agent, but at least his status clears the path for Okonkwo to assume move pass-catcher role.

Okonkwo is a great fit for this role because he managed to be prolific in Tennessee, despite catching passes from a carousel of generally unconvincing quarterbacks. A cycle mapped out by Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis, who noted how Okonkwo got “75 targets from *rookie* Cam Ward 68 targets from Ryan Tannehill 67 targets from *rookie* Will Levis 40 targets from Mason Rudolph 22 targets from 4 others.”

Sharp also pointed out how there is “still undiscovered potential & now works alongside Jayden Daniels.”

Chig Okonkwo has worked with these QBs in Tennessee:

Building a quick rapport between Okonkwo and Daniels should be one of the priorities for Blough this offseason. Their work together can form the foundation of the new play-caller’s passing game, while any crushing blocks from Okonkwo will be a welcome surprise.
