Patriots fans booed the team at halftime of their loss to Kansas City.

Former NFL defensive back Logan Ryan offered his take on New England Patriots wideout Romeo Doubs. Ryan had first-hand experience with the wide receiver late in his career.

Ryan played against the wide receiver in his final year in the league. Both the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers met in the 2023 NFC Divisional round. The 49ers ended up prevailing by a 24-21 score. However, Doubs made his mark. He caught four passes for 83 yards in the game.

Ryan saw firsthand the damage that dogs could do to a defense. Now, he believes that the wide receiver can do the same thing for the New England Patriots. He expanded on this with MassLive’s Karen Guregian.

“Out of all the Packers receivers, we felt he was the most dangerous 1-on-1,” Ryan said. “I just think he’s a really good player in that cluster of (free agent) wide receivers that were available.

“I think Doubs is going to ascend into that No. 1 role because he’s a really good route-runner, he’s really crafty and he has really good hands.”

Patriots Will Need Doubs To Fill Role

The Patriots will need Doubs to be a playmaker on the offense. They do not have a clear top receiver as of right now. He could step into that role, and this upcoming training camp may prove to be pivotal for him.

Historically, Doubs has not been a top receiver in the traditional sense. The Packers employed several receivers throughout Doubs’s time in Green Bay. This included the likes of Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, and Dontavian Wicks. If anything, a case for a top wide receiver role could be made for his performances during the playoffs.

In his Packers career, he was able to make an impact during the playoffs. He recorded 151 yards and a touchdown on just six catches in the 2024 Wild Card game against the Dallas Cowboys. He most recently was able to record 124 yards against the Chicago Bears and the Wild Card Game as well. If anything, he was able to establish his dominance over the course of the postseason.

Patriots Wideout Was Legendary In College

That being said, his college career was a bit different. Doubs was able to be a top receiver at Nevada. He was one of the most productive wide receivers in Nevada history. He played for the Wolfpack from 2018 to 2021. Doubs recorded 3,322 yards, which was fourth in school history. The playmaker had 26 receiving touchdowns, which tied for fifth in school history, and 225 catches, good enough for seventh in school history.

With those numbers also came record-breaking performances. He tied the single-game program record with 19 receptions in a single game against Fresno State in the 2021 season. That game was part of an elite stretch for the wideout. He was the first Nevada player since 2008 to record back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.

In 2020, he led the Mountain West with 1,002 receiving yards in nine contests. In 2021, he recorded 80 catches for 1,109 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The skill set to be a top wide receiver is there. Patriots fans are excited for him to show what he can do. Patriots legends believe he can take that next step. It will be interesting to see how he functions in this offense and if he can indeed be a major receiving weapon on a team that desperately needs a playmaker. The receiver room may not be finished as of now, but Doubs could be a major piece.
