New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo issued an apology on social media after drawing criticism for suggesting that chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and asthma were “fake.”

While making an appearance on the “Bring the Juice” podcast, Skattebo — who slammed college prospects making millions in NIL money earlier this year — was asked by host Frank Delana if he believes CTE is “a real thing.” The neurodegenerative disease occurs when the brain deteriorates over time from repeated trauma to the head, and is thus a major issue amongst former NFL players.

According to a major study from Boston University CTE Center in 2023, evidence of CTE was found in approximately 92 percent of the ex-NFL players that were examined (345 out of 376 brains).

Yet Skattebo argued that CTE does not in fact exist, responding: “No. It’s an excuse,” Moments later, Delana claimed that asthma is similarly an excuse before adding: “Is that a hot take?”

Skattebo agreed with the host, replying: “No, that’s a good take. Yes, asthma’s fake.”

Delana chimed in, “Is there anything worse than when you’re in fourth grade and someone’s huffin’ and puffin’? You’re just soft.” Skattebo expressed a similar sentiment, concluding: “Yeah, just literally breathe air.”

Taking to social media, droves of viewers swiftly slammed Skattebo for his “tasteless” comments. “Wow. Talk about losing and alienating half of your fan base. Dang,” an X user wrote, with another adding: “Definitely tasteless. Know people personally that suffer from asthma I wish it was fake. But it’s real and not fun to deal with. L from Cam. I like him.”

Addressing the fierce wave of backlash directed his way, Skattebo walked back his divisive statement while asserting that he’d be more careful with his words in the future.

“I recently did an interview and had a lapse in judgment, which resulted in me making a tasteless joke about CTE and asthma,” he wrote on X. “It was never my intention to downplay the seriousness of head injuries or asthma.

“I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my remarks, and I assure you that I’ll be more mindful and respectful going forward.”

The sincere apology from Skattebo was welcomed by NFL fans, many of whom expressed their appreciation in the comment section.

“We all [make] mistakes, hope you’re healing up well and feeling better,” one person said. “Looking forward to seeing you back on the field. Go Big Blue!”

Someone else responded, “Thanks for sharing that. Interviews are a trip. Enjoy watching you play, enjoy the ride.”

A fifth chimed in: “Glad you addressed this. CTE is a heavy topic in the football community and head health isn't something to take lightly. Hope this is a genuine learning moment for you and the team.”
