Joe Burrow sent a scare through Cincinnati Bengals Nation and the entire NFL community on Saturday when he appeared to tweak his knee during a high-stakes play in the inaugural Fanatics Flag Football Classic at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Bengals quarterback, playing as co-captain for the Wildcats FFC squad alongside Washington Commanders star Jayden Daniels, dove for a loose ball while trailing 32-14 in the second quarter against the U.S. men’s national flag football team.
The awkward landing immediately had fans holding their breath, fearing a repeat of the serious injuries that have plagued Burrow’s career.

Social media erupted in real time as clips circulated showing Burrow clutching at his leg after hitting the turf. Concerned fans flooded X with worried reactions:
“Joe Burrow almost got his ACL tore”
“How are the Bengals allowing Joe Burrow to play in this”
“Why is Joe Burrow playing in this flag football game when he can’t even stay on the field in the NFL”
“Burrow should not be out there”
Thankfully, Burrow got up under his own power and remained in the game, but the brief moment served as a stark reminder of how fragile his health has been in recent seasons. The Bengals have invested heavily in protecting their franchise quarterback, and seeing him take any kind of risk in an exhibition event — even a flag football showcase — left many supporters uneasy.
Joe Burrow’s Role in the Flag Football Classic
Burrow was named co-captain of the Wildcats FFC team, which drafted an all-star roster including Saquon Barkley, Logan Paul, Kyle Juszczyk, Davante Adams, Luke Kuechly, Derwin James Jr., Jalen Ramsey, DeAndre Hopkins, Odell Beckham Jr., and IShowSpeed. The event was billed as a high-profile, fun crossover between current NFL stars, former players, and celebrities, but the competitive intensity was clear from the start.
The Wildcats struggled against the U.S. men’s national flag football team. After Darrell “Housh” Doucette III scored on the opening drive for the U.S. squad, Burrow threw a pick-six that quickly put his team in a deep hole. The U.S. team dominated throughout, and the final score was never in doubt.
Joe Burrow’s Injury History and Bengals Concerns
Burrow has battled injuries throughout his NFL career, most notably multiple knee issues, including a torn ACL, and additional setbacks that limited his availability in subsequent seasons. Seeing Burrow take any kind of hit — even in a non-contact flag football setting — reignited concerns about his long-term durability.
The Bengals enter the 2026 offseason with high expectations after a disappointing 2025 campaign. Burrow’s participation in the flag football event was meant to be a fun, low-stakes appearance during the offseason, but the near-miss injury scare has once again put the spotlight on his health and availability.
