Hugo Ekitike injury update after Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Brighton in the Premier League.

Hugo Ekitike is likely to spend less than a week on the sideline after being substituted in Liverpool’s loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Reds’ hopes of earning a Champions League qualification spot suffered a blow with a 2-1 loss to the Seagulls. Liverpool went into the game without key attacking duo Mo Salah and Alexander Isak - and lost Ekitike within eight minutes. The striker was involved in a coming together with ex-Reds vice-captain James Milner.

Ekitike received treatment and tried to continue but went down again and was replaced by Curtis Jones inside eight minutes. Speaking after the game, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot said: "Hugo, I think he could play tomorrow if he needed to. It was a dead leg, as you call it here I think.

"Brighton did what we expected. If you face a team that has only had 62 hours of rest and the first thing you do is make it an intense game, play the first duels, play tough duels – nothing wrong with the duels, by the way – but unfortunately it was a collision and that led to Hugo going out."

“The injury appeared to come after James Milner made contact with the outside of Ekitike’s hip, which commonly leads to a painful contusion/cork or hip pointer injury. These are often quite sore initially, but they usually settle fairly quickly. Expected recovery time: 1 week.”

It remains to be seen whether Ekitike will link up with France’s squad for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Colombia during the international break. Liverpool are next in action when they face Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday 4 April.
