How Arsenal or Manchester City winning the Carabao Cup affects Newcastle's hopes of European football
Conference League slot: Since the winner of the Carabao Cup is granted a place in the Conference League play-off round, a victory for a team already qualified for the Champions League or Europa League via the league table means that spot is vacated. This ensures that the team finishing in 7th or potentially 8th place will benefit from an additional European pathway.
English clubs' allocation: While a trophy win by a top-four side shifts the nature of the spots, it does not actually create an extra place out of thin air for the country. Instead, it reallocates the existing cup-winner's slot to the league.
Newcastle's chances: Currently battling in a congested mid-table, the Magpies could see their European dreams kept alive even if they fail to make the top six. A win for Arsenal or City confirms that 7th place becomes a European qualifying position.
Extra Champions League spot: If the Premier League secures one of the two European performance spots for an extra Champions League place, 5th place becomes a UCL slot. This domino effect, combined with a Carabao Cup win for a top side, would see Europa League football for 6th and Conference League for 7th.
FA Cup impact: If the FA Cup winner also finishes in the top five or six, the Europa League spot for that competition also drops down. In a 'perfect storm' scenario where both cups are won by top-four/five teams, European football could theoretically reach as low as 8th place.
UEFA's new Swiss Model: Every higher Premier League finishing position now offers a slightly different entry point or coefficient seeding benefit. Therefore, even if a team qualifies for the Conference League via 7th place, they are entering a revamped competition.
European rivals: Other clubs currently sitting between 6th and 10th, like Brentford and Everton, also see a widening window for entry. It may also help Aston Villa, Liverpool and Chelsea if they fall down the table.
Confirmation: Once the trophy is lifted by either the Gunners or City, the "placeholder" for the Conference League is officially moved to the league standings. This provides clarity for fans and clubs alike as they enter the final quarter of the 2025/26 campaign.
