“What a beast” – Analyst raves about player as post Arsenal recovery steps up

Takehiro Tomiyasu

Takehiro Tomiyasu hasn’t worn an Arsenal shirt since 2024, but Gunners fans may be curious about the latest development.

Dutch analyst Hans Kraay Junior has delivered a glowing review of the former Arsenal defender following a recent standout performance for Ajax.

Tomiyasu, who joined Arsenal from Bologna in 2021 for around €20m, made 84 appearances in North London. He became a fan favourite for his versatility, composure, and reliability across the backline.

From Arsenal favourite to injury setback

His time at the Emirates was derailed by a serious knee injury, though. That eventually led to him mutually terminating his deal last year so he could focus on his recovery.

Ajax took the gamble in December, signing him until the end of the season. It’s already paying off. Handed his first start under new boss Óscar García last weekend, Takehiro Tomiyasu impressed in a dominant 4–0 win over Sparta Rotterdam.

Glowing praise from Dutch analyst

Kraay was one those watching with interest, and he was impressed. He believes the former Arsenal man clearly demonstrated his talents, labelling him “a real reinforcement”.

“Jesus, what a beast he is!” he wrote, relayed by Voetbal 4 U.

“He has an excellent first touch, can head the ball, and also provides wonderful defensive cover.”

As far as Kraay is concerned, Ajax should count their blessings. He can firmly see why Arsenal paid €20m for the 27-year-old five years ago.

“If this Japanese player hadn’t had all those injuries, he would never have played in an Ajax shirt. I understand now why those English top clubs spent so much money on him,” he added.

A good comeback story

With his fitness improving and confidence clearly returning, Takehiro Tomiyasu’s resurgence could become one of the most encouraging comeback stories in European football this season.

If he can stay injury‑free, Ajax may yet look to extend his stay, and it would be no surprise if interest from elsewhere soon follows.

For now, though, the sight of the versatile defender thriving again will be welcome news for fans, including Arsenal fans, who always knew just how much quality he possessed.
