Former Danny Simpson has cast doubt on Arsenal’s chances of prising Tino Livramento or Sandro Tonali away from Newcastle United, insisting European qualification could prove decisive in any potential transfer battle.
Simpson’s comments come amid growing speculation linking both players with moves away from St James’ Park ahead of the summer window. ARSENAL are among several clubs credited with interest in Tonali, while Livramento has also attracted attention due to his versatility and athletic profile.
However, Simpson believes Newcastle’s ability to secure European football next season will be a key factor in retaining their top talent. Reports indicate that uncertainty over the club’s European prospects has already fuelled speculation surrounding several first-team stars, including Tonali and Livramento
star Danny Simpson, Newcastle’s qualification for Champions League or Europa League football next season could make or break the club’s chances of retaining their talent this summer. Speaking to football.london via Lucky Rebel Soccer, he said: “I watched Tonali, he’s another one I watched that I was so impressed with.
“I think I tweeted how good I thought he was, watching him live at Man Utd last week. Didn’t realise how big he was, to be honest, and didn’t realise how well he moved with the ball, off the ball powerful.
“I think any of them top clubs are looking at him in that centre. City need one, Man Utd need one. Chelsea obviously can’t buy players. I think he’s one definitely people are looking at. Livramento, again with him, playing left-back, right-back. Yes, okay, he’s had injuries this season, so we’ll see how he finishes this season.
“The other one for me is Lewis Hall. As well, I think he looks…They got him for £30million, which I think at the time raised a few eyebrows, but the way he’s developed and looks like for the next 10 years could be a top, top, top left-back in the Premier League and for England.
Do Arsenal actually need Livramento or Tonali?
In Tonali’s case, the appeal is obvious. A dynamic, technically gifted midfielder capable of dictating tempo and winning possession, he would fit seamlessly into Mikel Arteta’s system. However, ARSENAL are already well stocked in midfield, with established starters and emerging depth options.
Livramento presents a different profile. His versatility across both flanks and attacking intent would add valuable depth, particularly given the physical demands of competing on multiple fronts. Yet Arsenal already possess strong options in wide defensive areas, and the pathway for consistent minutes could be limited—raising questions about whether such a move would benefit either party.
*ARSENAL*’s recruitment strategy in recent windows has focused on targeted upgrades rather than opportunistic signings. Unless a clear gap emerges, pursuing Livramento or Tonali may represent luxury additions rather than necessary reinforcements.
