Wayne Rooney has suggested Chelsea may need to upgrade on Joao Pedro if they are to close the gap to the Premier League’s elite, in comments that underline growing scrutiny around the club’s attacking options.
Rooney’s latest assessment comes despite the Brazilian’s outstanding recent form. The former Manchester United striker had only recently described Pedro as “probably the most in-form forward in the league,” after a run of goals that has powered Chelsea’s resurgence under new management.
Pedro’s numbers back that claim up. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a prolific spell in 2026, including a hat-trick against Aston Villa and a surge to 18 goals in all competitions this season, reflecting a sharp improvement since January.
However, Rooney appears to believe that while Pedro’s form is impressive, it may not be enough to lead a sustained title challenge. His view reflects a broader debate around CHELSEA’s squad construction: whether their current attacking line possesses the consistency and elite-level output required to compete with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal over a full campaign
He was quoted: I know Joao Pedro has done well but I think if you’re going to challenge for the big trophies you need that centre forward who is going to inspire you.
‘I just think if you want to be successful, if you want to win trophies, every successful team has good, experienced players in their squad and if you’re going to go down their model of buying young players, selling them, bringing more young players in and trying to develop them, then I think it’s going to be very, very difficult.’
Chelsea’s recent inconsistencies, including heavy defeats in Europe and questions over tactical direction, have only intensified that discussion. The club remain competitive in cup competitions and within reach of the top four, but a genuine title push has so far eluded them.
Osimhen link — realistic or ambitious?
One name inevitably raised in that context is Victor Osimhen, currently starring for Galatasaray. The Nigerian striker has long been regarded as one of Europe’s most complete No.9s, combining pace, aerial power and proven goal output at the highest level.
From an opinion standpoint, a move for Osimhen would represent exactly the kind of “upgrade” Rooney alludes to — a striker capable of delivering 25+ league goals and leading the line in high-pressure matches.
His profile fits the mould of a title-winning focal point more clearly than Pedro’s, who often thrives in fluid attacking systems rather than as a traditional spearhead.
Yet the feasibility of such a transfer is far from straightforward. Osimhen would command a substantial fee and wages, and CHELSEA’s recent recruitment model has leaned toward younger, developing talent rather than established superstars.
Ultimately, Rooney’s comments highlight a key dilemma for Chelsea: whether to continue backing Pedro’s development or invest heavily in a marquee striker.
