The Dallas Cowboys made a key subtraction from their defensive line recently when they traded Osa Odighizuwa to the San Francisco 49ers.
Now, the Cowboys could look to replace him through the 2026 NFL draft and one of the candidates is Michigan defensive lineman Ray Benny.
According to Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports, Benny met with the Cowboys on Thursday before Michigan's pro day. Pauline noted how Benny looked "explosive" while posting a 7.55 in the three-cone and 4.85 in the short shuttle.
"Defensive lineman Ray Benny, who has been dealing with a turf toe issue, timed 7.55 in the three-cone and 4.85 in the short shuttle," he said. "Like Moore, Benny looked explosive in drills run by the Atlanta Falcons. He’s an athletic interior lineman with scheme versatility. Benny met with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday."
Pauline goes on to add that the 6-foot-3, 298-pound prospect is an "athletic interior lineman with scheme versatility."
Ray Benny scouting report
According to NFL Draft Buzz, which projects the Michigan product as a fifth-round pick, Benny shines as a run defender but leaves a lot to be desired as an interior pass-rusher, which will limit him to early-down work.
"Benny is a run-first defensive tackle whose best football comes between the tackles in traditional two-gap fronts. He can hold his gap, shed blocks with his length, and make stops at or near the line of scrimmage," NFL Draft Buzz said.
"The concern is what happens on passing downs. His rush plan is thin, and he does not generate consistent pressure from the interior," the outlet added.
How Benny fits in Dallas
While not ideal, the Cowboys already have two very good interior pass-rushers in starters Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark, so Dallas wouldn't need much from Benny, especially on passing downs.
Where he can help is in run defense, where the Cowboys struggled to the tune of a bottom-10 finish in 2025.
With their need for more depth upfront and more run defenders, we could see the Cowboys taking a swing on the Michigan lineman on Day 3.
