When the Cleveland Browns signed new linebacker Quincy Williams to replace departed Devin Bush, they certainly got themselves a talker. Williams is not lacking for confidence, and when he was asked to describe his style of play, he came up with, “a cheetah chasing a gazelle when he first wake up.” The Browns will take as much cheetah-like performance as Williams can offer, and the media covering the Browns will take all the metaphors he can dream up.

When Williams was asked about the vaunted defensive line, too, he was complimentary. Given the speed with which Williams plays, and the fact he will be in tandem with Defensive Rookie of the Year Carson Schwesinger, it’s easy to imagine a big season for Williams ahead.

It will be especially useful to have Myles Garrett ahead of him. Williams wants to see how it looks playing behind Garrett, but he came up with another metaphor for the NFL’s single-season sack leader: unicorn.

“I don’t have no thought until I see it in person,” he said about Garrett. “Right now, I have an idea of it but I don’t know for sure until I see it in person. It’s a great idea. It’s a wonderful—compare it to a unicorn.”

Browns LBs Benefit From Myles Garrett, Defensive Line

The Browns would welcome a bounce-back year for Williams, who struggled with a shoulder injury last year and played only 13 games. He had 83 tackles, breaking a string of four straight 100-tackle seasons. He was asked about the prospect of playing behind the Browns line, what many would argue is the best defensive front in the NFL.

He said it will be his job to take care of the guys ahead of him. “I am gonna be spending a lot of money on dinner because I’ve gotta make sure those boys fed to keep the linemen up off me,” Williams said. “That’s my mindset right now, as I am walking through these rooms now. Just also seeing the type caliber people we got on the D-line and things like that. I am gonna be spending a lot of money. As long as they keep me clean, we’re gonna be good.”

Quincy Williams Joining Mike Rutenberg

Most important for Williams is that he is being reunited with his old position coach with the Jets, Mike Rutenberg, the Browns’ new defensive coordinator. Williams credits Rutenberg for developing him into an All-Pro in 2023.

“That’s my dog, he is like my brother,” Williams said. “First thing, before we talk about football, the big thing is, Rutey cares about the heart. The biggest thing, what I do off the field affects what I do on the field. So that’s what he wants, to tackle both things, as far as what I do on the field so I can show up as myself, show up as my personality—always smiling, that’s me. Show up every single day at work like that. So, he cares about that a lot.

“Then on the field, as long as you take care of off the field, on the field should be easy. He says that all the time. But on the field, he taught me everything I knew.”
