Wayne Rooney, a former Manchester United player, has discussed the long-term transfer strategy of Chelsea’s current ownership group. The former captain of England talked about his thoughts on the BBC show Match of the Day after the most recent round of Premier League games.
Chelsea are known for going after young players aggressively, often putting potential ahead of experience in the transfer market. People have been very critical of this approach to hiring because the team are still struggling to be consistent in both domestic and European competitions this season.
The West London team lost 3-0 to Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, a big disappointment. They are now in sixth place in the Premier League table. Since January, the team have had a hard time getting a steady stream of good results under Liam Rosenior’s leadership. Their recent loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League has raised questions about the first-team squad’s immaturity.
Many experts think the main reason for their current mid-season slump is that they are relying too heavily on young players, with no older players to guide them. Rooney said that the lack of experienced leaders in the starting lineup could make it harder for the club to win big trophies in the near future. The Manchester United star gave his thoughts on the situation:
“I just think if Chelsea want to be successful, you want to win trophies, every successful team has got good, experienced players in the squad. And if you want to go down this model of buying young players, selling them, bringing more young players in and trying to develop them, then I think it’s going to be very, very difficult.”
Since taking over in 2022, the club have spent a lot of money on players under 23 while letting a few older players leave the London giants. Individual players like Joao Pedro and Estêvão have done well, but it seems like the team as a whole doesn’t work together as well when they play against tough opponents in high-pressure situations.
Liam Rosenior Faces Growing Pressure Following Disappointing Run Of Results
The current head coach of the West London team is under a lot of pressure because the team have not been doing well in any of its competitions. After losing 3-0 to Everton, the manager admitted that the team’s performance was not up to the club’s standards.
Chelsea have lost three of their last four Premier League games, which makes it even harder for them to qualify for the Champions League. The manager must win the next two games against Manchester City and Manchester United to keep the board’s support.
