NBA legend and March Madness analyst Charles Barkley went on a passionate rant following the No. 3 Michigan State Spartans' Round of 32 win over the No. 6 Louisville Cardinals on Saturday.
The conversation centered on legendary Spartans head coach Tom Izzo. While Charles Barkley spoke highly of Izzo, he used the moment to address criticism of his coaching style, calling out players' parents and members of the media for being too sensitive to tough coaching.
“You’re right about Coach Izzo. His teams never underachieve. It’s actually a beautiful thing to watch,” Barkley said. “He’s one of the few coaches who can still yell at his players. We got these babies out here now… The last couple of years, the media - who don’t know anything about sports because they never played - say, ‘Why is he yelling at his players?’ That’s called coaching. He cares.”
Barkley continued by emphasizing that players who don't want to be coached hard may not be a fit for programs like Michigan State.
“If you don’t want to be coached, you probably shouldn’t come to Michigan State. I love the fact that he never backs down. Your job as a coach is to coach your players. If their parents and friends get mad because you’re getting yelled at, you need better parents and better friends.”
Barkley's comments quickly went viral on social media, with many fans agreeing with his stance on Izzo's coaching tactics. It's an approach Izzo has maintained throughout his tenure at Michigan State Spartans since 1995 - one that has made him the all-time winningest coach in the Big Ten, a national champion, and the leader of 27 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
“Tom Izzo is from a different era and represents much of the good we have failed to retain from those times. The man is a legend and a true leader in the truest sense of the word!” one fan said.
Another added, “Jay Wright, John Wooden, Joe Gibbs, Bill Walsh, and Tony Dungy never yelled at their players. Yelling is a weak person’s way of communicating.”
“This is correct. All the talent in the world does not make a great player if they (or their parents) cannot accept coaching,” another fan shared.
One fan wrote, “Is it the best approach in the current environment? Maybe not. But our coach is still the best coach.”
“Truly one of the greatest coaches! Go, green!” another commented.
