The Los Angeles Chargers may need more defensive reinforcements than people think. While they have focused on key extensions such as Teair Tart and have already signed Dalvin Tomlinson in free agency, they may want to further develop more depth in their front seven. According to some, the Chargers may be tempted to reunite with an all too familiar player.

With Tuli Tuipolotu and Khalil Mack installed as pass rushing talents, the Chargers could seek a third option to truly balance out the group. With Odafe Oweh departing the team for the Washington Commanders, that gap is wide open. That spot could end up going to Joey Bosa.

A Familiar Face: Could Joey Bosa Return?

With Bosa still on the open market and the Chargers’ insistence to retain their ample cap space, a highly cheap deal could be executed. After all, there may have been enough production in his year with the Bills to warrant reconsideration. In 15 games, Bosa accumulated five sacks, nine tackles for loss, and sixteen QB hits. While not the production of Oweh, who excelled down the stretch, that could still be enough to support the Charger’s exceptional talent at linebacker.

Chargers fans truly saw what the trio of Tuipolotu, Oweh, and Mack could do after Mack’s return for injury when they had 31 sacks over the season’s final seven weeks. If they can find someone in the mold of Oweh, they can return to that level of output. Whether that can be found in Bosa remains to be seen.

The way that Bosa exited was not the prettiest however. After eight stellar seasons with the team, the Chargers simply released him in 2024. Given that he was one of the only players who had played with the Chargers from their time in San Diego, it was a pretty harsh situation. Now though, with his season with the Bills showing his capabilities, it feels right that he could return home after a year’s separation.

Short-Term Reunion vs. Long-Term Planning

Another decision however, could be whether or not the Chargers look at defense in the draft. With the No. 22 pick in the draft, and several in the middle rounds of the draft, the Chargers could be looking at a lot of intriguing players in that area. Cashius Howell, Zion Young, Jacob Rodriguez, and Romello Height could all be in play.

So while the temptation of Bosa is there, it could perhaps be wiser for the Chargers to look at long term options. After all, with Mack having been re-signed this offseason, there is no telling his timeline in the league. By adding another aging star, it could complicate things down the line.

Still, for what Bosa has brought to the franchise in both its San Diego and Los Angeles days, it could be worht at the very least offering him a visit and potentially a workout. It may not come to fruition, but it could get fans excited about what a potential Bosa reunion could mean to the franchise in a year they could be going all in.
