Todd Boehly favourite had one of his worst games in a Chelsea shirt vs Everton - opinion

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly would have been extremely disappointed with the performance of Liam Rosenior’s side against Everton on Saturday.

Chelsea were beaten thoroughly by their Premier League rivals, losing 3-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Of course, fans will also be disappointed with Boehly and Clearlake Capital amid the direction that the club are heading in. However, they have still invested a lot of money in players and will be expecting more.

Marc Cucurella’s nightmare performance against Everton

Marc Cucurella was one of the first signings that Chelsea made under Boehly and Clearlake, and the defender did not come cheap.

The Blues paid more than £60m to sign Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022, which was not a bad decision. The 27-year-old has been among the best left-backs in the Premier League since arriving at Stamford Bridge, but he has struggled lately and it was no different on Saturday.

In fact, his performance against Everton was probably one of his worst in a blue shirt. Sofascore gave Cucurella a match rating of just 5.8.

He failed to make a single tackle and won just one ground duel. Cucurella was also dribbled past once.

Bar Enzo Fernandez, none of Chelsea’s players have played particularly well during their run of four straight defeats.

As well as Cucurella, Cole Palmer also had a difficult outing against Everton. After the international break, there needs to be significant improvement.

Why Todd Boehly was so keen to sign Marc Cucurella

Boehly was acting as Chelsea’s interim sporting director at the time of Cucurella’s arrival, and while the Spaniard is obviously a very good footballer, that is not the sole reason behind the American buying him.

Boehly recently discussed Chelsea’s acquisition of Cucurella, revealing that he signed the Spain international simply because Manchester City wanted him.

A very interesting “transfer strategy”, but Cucurella has been a significantly better addition than most of the signings made by Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, who are actual sporting directors. Well, they are supposed to be anyway.
