Giants' running back Cam Skattebo apologized for making controversial comments about CTE and asthma
The New York Giants, for all intents and purposes, appear to be putting together a pretty strong offseason. After hiring John Harbaugh to be their new head coach, the Giants have worked quickly to upgrade a roster that is led by a budding young core of upcoming stars. Part of that group is running back Cam Skattebo, whose rookie season was cut short after he suffered a severe ankle injury in late October.
Skattebo has been working his way back to full health, but during his downtime, he’s developed a larger online presence, whether it be through streaming, social media, or appearing on various shows and podcasts. During his latest podcast appearance on “Bring the Juice,” Skattebo made some controversial comments regarding CTE and asthma that forced him to issue an apology on social media.

I recently did an interview and had a lapse in judgment, which resulted in me making a tasteless joke about CTE and asthma. It was never my intention to downplay the seriousness of head injuries or asthma. I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my remarks, and I
The Giants selected Skattebo in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and after a slow start, he eventually ended up taking over as New York’s starting running back. In eight games, Skattebo racked up 410 yards and five touchdowns on 101 carries, while also catching 24 passes for 207 yards and another pair of scores.
Skattebo quickly became one of the more beloved players in the NFL, as his old-school style of play, which saw him frequently embrace contact regardless of whether or not he had the ball in his hands, made him rather unique. However, Skattebo’s gruesome injury brought a swift end to his season, but once he returns, he’s expected to be New York’s No. 1 running back again.
Off the field, Skattebo has a bit of a wild personality that embodies his play on the field. That leads to some eye-opening comments, and you can bet he turned heads when he labeled both CTE and asthma as “fake” ailments. Skattebo quickly faced backlash for his comments, and he apologized for what he labeled a “tasteless joke.”
“I recently did an interview and had a lapse in judgment, which resulted in me making a tasteless joke about CTE and asthma,” Skattebo said in a post on X. “It was never my intention to downplay the seriousness of head injuries or asthma. I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my remarks, and I assure you that I’ll be more mindful and respectful going forward. Much love!!!”

In the world of modern media, it doesn’t take much to get fans upset with you, and Skattebo has found that out the hard way. Regardless of whether or not he was joking, it was poor judgment on his part to make those sorts of comments, especially considering how big of an impact CTE has had on the NFL over the past decade or so.
Skattebo will look to put this incident in the past and continue working his way back to full health. Assuming he is ready for the start of the new season, Skattebo will be joining a promising offense that also features quarterback Jaxson Dart and star wide receiver Malik Nabers, who is recovering from a season-ending torn ACL injury himself. Assuming these guys can stay on the field, it’s safe to say that things are looking up for New York.
