Nine misplaced passes, six duels lost: Liam Rosenior cannot trust Chelsea liability again - opinion

The performance against Everton was not only terrible, but one that has struck dread through the fear of supporters. No one came out of it with pass marks, least of all defender Wesley Fofana.

Beto made a mockery of Fofana during the game as the Frenchman, once a £77m signing from Leicester, endured another dismal 90 minutes in a Chelsea shirt. He seems completely uninterested as things stand.

Whether it be with his performances, his inability to follow a runner, or having a joke immediately after an 8-2 aggregate defeat to PSG with Ousmane Dembele. Fofana has become a liability in this Chelsea side.

Who would you rather replace Liam Rosenior if he gets sacked — Cesc Fabregas or Filipe Luis?

Both men were linked with the Chelsea job before Rosenior's arrival! Explain your choice in the comments…

If Liam Rosenior had the freedom to make changes to his defence, he surely would. But as things stand, Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill – his best two centre-backs – remain sidelined with lengthy absences.

The stats prove Wesley Fofana is lacking care or concentration

What was clear on Saturday evening was that Everton wanted it more. Chelsea looked nervy and unwilling to take on the responsibility of an away win, while Everton were champing at the bit, ready.

On Saturday, Fofana misplaced nine of his 82 passes. The only other Chelsea player to misplace as many was Enzo Fernandez, but only because the midfielder was trying to create and attempted 94 in total.

It’s either a lack of concentration or decision-making, or perhaps it is a lack of desire to do so. A centre-back’s job is to win duels and yet, Fofana only managed to win six of his 12 duels on Merseyside.

Then, Beto ran twice off of Fofana to score, and while the goalkeeping was poor, the defending was even worse. It looked like Fofana didn’t care, and that was evident in losing half of the duels he tried to win.

Liam Rosenior might have issues, but Fofana cannot be trusted

His behaviour with Dembele, his lack of fight to win his duels and his lack of care and concentration when in possession all point to one thing. Fofana doesn’t care, he’s lost motivation, and it makes him a liability.

Trevoh Chalobah might be injured, and it is quite clear Rosenior doesn’t fancy Benoit Badiashile. So who else is there to choose from? The stats show Tosin Adarabioyo is Chelsea’s best defender in the air.

Chelsea have already rejected a £40m+ offer!

Chelsea have an issue when it comes to defending against bigger, stronger strikers. Burnley, Leeds, and Everton are all recent examples of Chelsea conceding goals to strikers who are bigger than Fofana and co.

Jorrel Hato is naturally a left-back, Josh Acheampong cannot be relied upon at this early stage of his career and Mamadou Sarr will still be reeling from his PSG hook. Chelsea need better defenders.
