Thomas Tuchel rewards one-cap England star for Scotland snub with call-up to replace Eze

Harvey Barnes is set to be called up to the England squad by Thomas Tuchel after Eberechi Eze suffered an injury, talkSPORT understands.

Barnes, who turned down a switch of international allegiance to Scotland in February, last played for the Three Lions in 2020.

The Newcastle winger had long been tipped to play for the Tartan Army amid his drought of call-ups to the England set-up.

However, after scoring 14 goals and assisting five in all competitions this season, his form has been rewarded.

Barnes will replace Eze, who played no part in Arsenal's Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

The ex-Crystal Palace man missed out on that game due to a lower leg injury, and he's set to withdraw from the Three Lions squad.

He was originally called up by Tuchel on Friday for the final camp before the World Cup this summer.

But his injury will now see him miss out in what could end up being a major blow to his hopes of playing at the tournament.

For Barnes, it will be the complete opposite, as he may now think he can make a late bid to feature for England.

He has only ever played one game for his nation before, featuring in a friendly against Wales in October 2020.

That was almost six years ago, however, the 28-year-old could now play against Uruguay or Japan next week.

England play Uruguay on March 27, before facing Japan on March 31.

'He's been brilliant'

Ex-England striker Darren Bent is delighted to see Barnes called up for the Three Lions after his strong performances this season.

Breaking the news, talkSPORT's chief football correspondent, Alex Crook, said: "The suggestion is Harvey Barnes, who, of course, turned down Scotland because he felt he had the chance to make the plane with England for the World Cup, he is going to replace him.

"So Harvey Barnes in, Eberechi Eze out.

"And I guess a reward for Harvey Barnes for backing himself by turning down that Scotland call-up."

Bent then added: "For Harvey Barnes, I'm happy for him because I think he should have had a [another] cap by now.

"He's been brilliant this season."

Turning down Scotland

Scotland boss Steve Clarke revealed last month that despite talks with Barnes, the winger wouldn't be switching nationality.

"It is the perennial question, everyone keeps asking me about it," Clarke told BBC 5 Live at the Nations League draw.

"This time, I can say for sure, Harvey is going to stay and try to concentrate on playing for England.

"He’s not going to play for Scotland, so you can put that one out there.

"Is that definitive? Yes. So nobody needs to ask me about it anymore, or ask Harvey about it.

"Am I disappointed? Listen, Harvey can make his decision, so we move on."
