Three goalkeepers Chelsea could sign after Robert Sanchez's latest howler - opinion

Robert Sanchez’s season at Chelsea is starting to unravel after another mistake on Saturday.

The Chelsea goalkeeper started the campaign strongly but was dropped earlier this month after making an error against Arsenal.

Since then, Sanchez has been restored to the first XI and played the entire 90 minutes in the Blues’ 3-0 defeat to Everton. However, he was at fault for the Toffees’ second goal, and it would now not be a surprise to see the Blues replace him in the summer. The Chelsea Chronicle has looked at three potential successors to the Spaniard.

Giorgi Mamardashvili

Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is reportedly attracting interest from other clubs after failing to oust Alisson from the team.

Mamardashvili has not always been convincing when he has played for the Reds this season, but the 25-year-old was excellent for Valencia when he was their first-choice goalkeeper.

Bearing that in mind, Mamardashvili could be an option worth considering for Chelsea.

Bart Verbruggen

Unlike Mamardashvili, Brighton & Hove Albion shot-stopper Bart Verbruggen has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

Last month, it was reported that Liam Rosenior is keen on Verbruggen, who is one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League.

What Brighton have shown in the past, especially when Chelsea have come knocking, is that all of their players have a price. It means the Dutchman could be available in the next transfer window.

Robin Roefs

Sunderland’s Robin Roefs is another goalkeeper thought to be on the Blues’ radar.

Chelsea could have to pay £50m to sign Roefs, but if Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen keep making mistakes between the sticks, that is unlikely to bother them too much.

Of course, Chelsea do not have to go out and buy Roefs or another new goalkeeper. They already have Mike Penders on their books. The Belgian could return to the club in the summer and replace Sanchez.
